Pre-Masters (Media, Journalism and Film Studies)

Course Description

This course has been designed for international students from a variety of backgrounds who:
•need to enhance their academic skills
•require additional English-language training
•need help adjusting to the UK academic environment or are unsure about the level of their study skills, and/or
•want to refresh their knowledge in their chosen academic subject area.

Course description

This course:
•offers five routes: Computing; International Relations and International Development; Law; Management and Finance; and Media, Journalism and Film Studies
•is based in our International Study Centre at the heart of the Sussex campus
•offers flexible start dates in September, January and May, depending on your English language level
•will give you the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed in your Masters studies
•provides routes to a number of Masters degrees at Sussex, subject to you passing the course and meeting the required grades for progression
•is taught by Study Group, specialists in university preparation for international students.

You will be offered University-managed accommodation, provided you apply by the appropriate deadline. Private accommodation is also available. All accommodation is subject to availability.

Successful and satisfactory completion of your Pre-Masters course guarantees you will receive a conditional offer of a place on one of these Masters degrees at Sussex:
•MA in Digital Documentary
•MA in Digital Media
•MA in Filmmaking
•MA in Film Studies
•MA in Gender and Media
•MA in International Journalism
•MA in Journalism and Documentary Practice
•MA in Journalism and Media Studies
•MA in Media and Cultural Studies
•MA in Media Practice for Development and Social Change

Entry requirements

The Pre-Masters course is designed for international students requiring additional English language and academic skills. It is not available to UK or EU students. Students are normally aged 20 or older.

* A degree in a related field, an undergraduate honours degree in any subject, or certain diplomas with high grades in a related field.
* English language: IELTS 6.0 (5.5 in all sections) or equivalent for the two-term course (January or April start) or IELTS 5.5 (5.5 in all sections) or equivalent for the three-term course (September or January start). If you require additional English language training before you start your academic course, you can first join the intensive English for Pre- Masters (EPM) module. You will need one term of EPM if you have an IELTS of 5.0 (5.0 in all sections) or equivalent, starting in either June or September. You will need two terms if you have an IELTS of 4.5 (4.5 in all sections) or equivalent, starting in June. You will need to have reached IELTS 5.5 (5.5 in all sections) in order to progress to the three-term Pre-Masters.
