MSc in Applied Social Psychology


Course Description

This course offers advanced study in applied psychology, taught by one of the UK’s leading research groups in this area. It provides you with a thorough grounding in theoretical perspectives, along with the appropriate research techniques. Our expertise is particularly strong in the areas of consumer beliefs and behaviour, intergroup relations and crowd dynamics, and issues related to health and illness.

This MSc attracts students from different cultural backgrounds and is designed for those wishing to undertake postgraduate research in psychology or for those interested in a wide variety of careers involving research, or policy-related work in applied contexts.

Course structure

We continue to develop and update our modules for 2016 entry to ensure you have the best student experience. In addition to the course structure below, you may find it helpful to refer to the Modules tab.

On this course, you take a series of taught modules that enable you to gain knowledge and skills in key areas of applied social psychology, including:
•four subject-specific modules (60 credits), two in the autumn term and two in the spring term, covering topics such as intergroup processes and consumer behaviour, as well as the possibility of a research internship in the spring term
•four modules in research methods and data analysis (60 credits), which help you gain expertise in the key research techniques used in this field, including a range of specialised quantitative and qualitative methods
•a substantial research project in your chosen field (60 credits), supervised by a member of faculty specialising in that area.

Assessment

The taught modules are assessed by a variety of methods that include term papers, presentations and unseen examinations. The project is assessed by a dissertation.

In order to be considered for a Chancellor's International Scholarship you must meet all of the following criteria:Have applied for and accepted a place to start a Postgraduate taught degree at the University of Sussex (e.g., MA, MSc, LLM, MRes, Postgraduate Diploma, and Graduate Diploma) excluding certain degrees listed on our website. Be assessed as liable to pay fees at the "overseas" (namely the non-EU) rate.Have sufficient funds to meet your tuition fees and living expenses, after taking account of the possible award of a Chancellor's International Scholarship.Students who hold other University of Sussex scholarships will not be eligible for the Chancellors International Scholarship.

Chancellor's Masters Scholarship (2015) - 20+ Awards

The University is delighted to offer 100 Masters scholarships to attract the most talented students to study at Sussex. Our awards include enhanced scholarships of £10,000 which are available for 2015 only and standard scholarships of £3,000. The scholarships are available on a competitive basis to UK/EU and non-EU students and confirm Sussex's position as one of the UK's leading universities for postgraduate study. The application deadline is 1st August 2015.Scholarships will be allocated in a number of separate rounds during 2015 (February, April, June and August).The first allocation of awards will take place in February. Scholarships will be awarded in a number of separate rounds, in February, April, June and August, with successful applicants notified after each round. If you are not immediately successful in being awarded a scholarship, but meet the eligibility criteria, you will automatically be re-considered in the following allocation round alongside any new applications. To be considered for a scholarship you should apply online for an eligible full-time Masters course between 1 October 2014 and 1 August 2015 via the University's postgraduate application system.

To be considered for the scholarship (standard or enhanced), please complete the Chancellor's Masters Scholarship application form by 1 August. You are only required to submit one application, your eligibility for the standard or enhanced award will be assessed if you are made an offer of a scholarship.

Sussex Graduate Scholarship (2015) - 20+ Awards

The University is delighted to announce the launch of an unlimited number of enhanced scholarships of £10,000 for Sussex students admitted to full-time Master's degree courses in September 2015. The scholarships are jointly funded by the government and the University, and confirm Sussex's position as one of the UK's leading universities for postgraduate study.The enhanced scholarships are available for admission in 2015 only and are based on progression from an undergraduate course where students have paid the higher tuition fee, in operation since 2012/13. Additionally, the University has provided funding to make enhanced scholarships available to international students at Sussex.In line with our sector leading Masters scholarship offer in 2014 we will continue to offer an unlimited number of standard scholarships at £3,000 and £2,000 for Sussex students admitted to full-time Master's degree courses in September 2015.[[Type of award]]
