Global Political Economy - MA


Course Description

New economic powers are rising. We face a growing number of challenges, including:
-Climate change
-Financial instability
-Food, energy and security crises

Can the global political economy cope with these issues? You’ll examine the emergence of the global political economy, what economic crisis means for capitalism, and the distribution of wealth and power. Our unique MA analyses the impacts of these contemporary transformations.

How will I study?

You take taught modules and options. You may also do a research placement. You will be assessed by term papers, and write a supervised 10,000-word dissertation.

Value of Scholarship(s)

Scholarships cover university tuition fees and a stipend (currently £14,296)

Eligibility

UK upper second class honours degree or equivalent. The scholarships will be awarded for a period of either three years for those with an ESRC recognised research training qualification or equivalent (+3) or four years (1+3) for those without. Scholarships include payment of UK/EU fees and in the case of UK students a maintenance grant (for information the 2016-17 rate is £14,296 per annum). EU students will normally only be eligible for a fees-only award. EU students may be eligible for the maintenance grant (at the UK rate) where they have been living in the UK for three years prior to the start of the course.

Application Procedure

If you wish to apply for an ESRC studentship you must first apply for a place on a PhD course at the University of Sussex. Once you have secured a place you will need to complete an ESRC studentship application form. Sussex holds an annual briefing session on how to apply for an ESRC studentship. The briefing will take place at the PhD Open Evening on 16th November.

HESPAL Scholarship (2017) - 2 Awards

The HESPAL Scholarship is a joint award offered by the British Council and the University of Sussex which is centred on building capacity in Palestinian universities by providing young Palestinian academics with an English Masters course in a subject that will benefit their home institution and hence the Palestinian Territories.The University of Sussex and the British Council are committed to providing two scholarships per year. The scholarships covers:
-Tuition Fees
-Pre-departure briefing from the British Council
-Arrival allowances
-Thesis allowances
-A monthly allowance to cover living expenses
-Travel costs to and from the UKNB: Scholarships do not cover the cost for any accompanying family.Where awards are made in relation to a fee waiver no fee award will exceed the total fee payable.Holders of the HESPAL Scholarship are unable to hold another scholarship from the University of Sussex.Type of award

Eligibility

Be a resident citizen of Palestinian Territories.Be currently employed by the Palestinian university which nominates her/him.Have a Bachelors or Masters degree from a Palestinian university with a minimum grade of very good (and equivalent to at least a 2.1 Bachelor's Degree from UK).Be below the age of 35 on application.Sign a written undertaking to return to Palestine within a time frame agreed, normally one year.Have IELTS certification appropriate for course and university (normally at least 6.5, sometimes higher).

Entry Requirements

An upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or above, preferably in a humanities or social sciences subject. Relevant degrees include political science, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, sociology, and area studies. A degree in the social sciences or humanities does not constitute a strict requirement and applicants with degrees in other disciplines will be given due consideration. Relevant work and voluntary experience will also be considered, particularly in cases where candidates fall short of the academic requirement. English language requirements - Standard level (IELTS 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each section).
