Dip (PG) in International Teacher Education

Course Description

This is an exciting and innovative course which combines academic development with enhancement of professional educational practice.

It is designed for international students who have a teaching qualification and who wish to develop their critical thinking capacities and professional skill set. It focuses primarily on two groups of students: a) those interested in teaching in schools and b) those interested in the teacher education of those teaching in schools. It enables all students to develop their understanding of a broad range of educational issues and theoretical perspectives locally within the UK, as well as more internationally.

For those interested in teaching in schools, the course comprises: academic and professional study of a wide range of pedagogic, policy and philosophical issues taught through modules. It also includes one day a week in a local school to reflect the needs of the student. By the second term, all students will be able to contribute to teaching in English in the school in which they have been placed.
For those interested in teacher education, the course also comprises: experience of the way in which Initial Teacher Education (ITE) is delivered within the University to train new teachers.
By the second term, all students will be able to contribute to teaching in English in schools and on ITE courses at the University. This means that, for this route, a professional qualification in teaching, as well as experience of training teachers, is essential.

All students also learn how to conduct their own research in a context relevant to their own educational needs and interests.

This course carries 120 credits.

English language support

Intensive English language instruction prior to and during the course is available at the Sussex Centre for Language Studies to help you develop your language skills. An additional charge is made for this instruction.
