Entrepreneurship - MSc


Course Description

Surrey lies at the crossroads of two major international airports, the bustling international city of London, and in a region rich in dynamic businesses focused on exports and innovation.

This programme within Surrey Business School leverages these strengths through our proximity to Surrey Research Park and business incubators in London. Students will be inspired by both academics and practitioners with start-up experience as they ponder real-world business challenges.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Our MSc Entrepreneurship programme is designed for those planning to set up their own businesses, or work in high-growth areas of large organisations where competitive advantage depends on the successful harnessing of creativity and innovation.

In this context, the programme develops essential entrepreneurial skills such as business planning, business modelling, pitching and working in a digital environment. Students will also have the opportunity to work in entrepreneurial teams, guided by a mentor, to simulate the experience of setting up a business for an original idea.

The programme encourages ‘learning by doing’ to develop the attributes, ways of thinking and behaviour of an entrepreneur. At the end of the year this culminates in a final research project to develop an individual business plan or consulting project.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year. It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation. The following modules are indicative, reflecting the information available at the time of publication. Please note that not all modules described are compulsory and may be subject to teaching availability and/or student demand.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME

The programmes aim to provide a high quality education that is intellectually rigorous and up-to-date, as well as relevant to the needs of future entrepreneurs whether they are inside existing organisations or starting up companies.

Modules provide a theoretical framework and practical skills that aspiring entrepreneurs need in order to cope with an increasingly complex and dynamic business world in which we live. The programmes provide the students with the basis for developing their own approach to learning and personal development.

The compulsory modules aim to provide not only a rigorous treatment of the relevant theory, but also the quantitative techniques necessary to understand the literature and undertake empirical investigations in the areas of entrepreneurship.

The optional modules aim to offer students a broader perspective on the subject matter and allow them to specialise in areas that are of particular interest to them.

The final project provides an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge in the form of either a business plan, or a consultation project.

PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes in the following areas:

Knowledge and understanding
-A systematic, in-depth understanding of the development, issues and influences relevant to different areas of entrepreneurship
-A high level theoretical and applied knowledge of entrepreneurship practice such as how to put together a business plan
-An understanding of the research process related to academia but also to practical market research

Intellectual / cognitive skills
-Demonstrate high level learning and problem solving abilities in the range of modules studied
-Conduct entrepreneurship-oriented research and applied research using appropriate research design and methodology (not required for PG Certificate), to collect and analyse data, to interpret findings and communicate results effectively

Professional practical skills
-An ability to independently evaluate critical approaches and techniques relevant to setting up a business
-An ability to independently evaluate and to create business plans using relevant information with justification and relate them to existing knowledge structures and methodologies

Key / transferable skills
-An ability to demonstrate competence in a range of skills that are relevant to the needs of future entrepreneurs, irrespective of whether they are inside existing organisations or setting up their own businesses

What attracted you to choose Surrey and to study your course here?
I had it easy - back in 2010 only a handful of universities in the UK offered PG courses in Entrepreneurship, so my choice was narrowed down for me. Surrey seemed like the best option - with a strong academic record, excellent facilities and infrastructure (and you DO need that for social sciences, too!) and within close proximity of Europe's busiest business hub, I made my mind up within hours.

What is your strongest memory of your time at Surrey – what do you picture first when you think of being here?
My strongest memories are Lecture Theatre 1 in the Rik Medlik Building (Faculty of Management and Law back in my days) and Manor Park. In business, relationships you make are just as important as the knowledge you gain and Manor Park created some of the best friendships I've had ever since.

What is the one thing you would say about Surrey (or your course) to someone who doesn’t know anything about it?
Keeping it simple, I'd just say "go to Surrey, you'll thank me later!" But in all fairness, I'd mention the superb staff and facilities, excellent accommodation and sports venues, and the kind of people that are hard to find elsewhere. For the first time, my course mates were genuinely interested in everything we had done, and we were equally immersed in Entrepreneurship both inside and outside of the classroom. Last but not least, I would recommend MSc Entrepreneurship as such - writing a business plan instead of traditional dissertation was of great advantage to a person like me, with strong preference for applied knowledge.

This scheme is for applicable to Postgraduate Taught entry students only and is reviewed annually.Students who graduated in 2013 are eligible, as well as alumni from previous years, on receipt of evidence of the award from Surrey and where we can identify that you actually studied in Guildford. Students from SII-DUFE are eligible for this scheme.Associated Institution students are not eligible. Not available to modular self-pacing students.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally hold a Bachelors degree (a UK 2.1) or an equivalent qualification from a British or overseas university. If an applicant’s Bachelors degree is not in a subject related to the MSc, some relevant work experience would be an advantage. Higher level professional qualifications may also be accepted. Each applicant is assessed on their own merit.
