Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (MRes)


Course Description

Why this course?

This one-year MRes aims to provide advanced study in Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control within Europe and globally. You'll have access to laboratory facilities that provide hands-on experience essential for experimental analysis.

The course is ideal for you if you're looking for an alternative to an MSc, are interested in carrying out shorter research projects or if you wish to tailor your studies to suit your own research interests and career objectives.

An MRes takes one year full-time or two years part-time to complete. Part-time study is only available to UK students.

You’ll study

This degree combines a number of subjects, including:
- geotechnics
- microbiology
- chemistry
- hydrogeology

You'll complete six taught classes. Four classes are compulsory and two are optional.

MRes thesis

You can choose from a wide range of topics. Supervisors will be chosen from one of our three main research groups:
- Civil engineering
- Environmental engineering
- Environmental health
- Geoscience
- Structural engineering
- Transport management
- Water systems and hydroinformatics

Facilities

The department’s £6 million purpose-built and state-of-the-art research laboratories opened in June 2013. These facilities include:
- Geomechanics Laboratory
- Environmental Chemistry Laboratory
- Microbiology Laboratory
- Structures Laboratory
- Numerical Modelling of Geomaterials
- Field Investigation Capabilities

Teaching staff

You'll be taught by a group of professionally qualified staff with relevant expertise and teaching and research experience. We've very strong industrial links. We've an active Industrial Advisory Board that contributes to curriculum design and the overall student experience.

Elective Classes

Our MRes students also have the option of taking “Independent Study in Collaboration with Industry”. This exciting new module allows students to gain credits for work carried out with, at or for an external organisation. Approval for students taking this module is done on a case-by-case basis by the MRes Course Director. Student participation is selected by competitive application and CV.

Learning & teaching

This course is delivered via a mixture or lectures, tutorial, practical laboratories and research seminars.

Assessment

You'll be assessed via a mixture of written assignments, formal exams, lab-based assessments, poster presentations and team projects.

The final MRes thesis is assessed orally in a viva voce exam.

Careers

An MRes will significantly enhance your CV and improve future employment prospects.

During your studies you'll develop a range of transferable skills that are relevant to careers in industry, academia and the public sector.

In addition, our MRes will develop your communication skills, critical analysis and presentation skills as well as giving you experience of conference attendance and working with large bodies of complex material. An MRes can also be used as a stepping stone for students wishing to continue to an MPhil or PhD, either as a precursor or initial component of the research.

495.jpg Working with businesses for almost 10 years I had noticed a shift towards environmental managementand legislation and it was an area that interested me but I wasn't sure that I wanted or indeed could achieve a complete career change. Having the opportunity to speak to someone at the University of Strathclyde who listened to what experience I had and explained how I may be able to integrate that with a Masters in Research really helped. This support and consideration gave me the impetus to return to study and also choose the University of Strathclyde as the place to study.

The fact that I had no environmental or science background did concern me but the support from each of the tutors was fantastic and I was always able to discuss any areas of concern I had. I still had to put in a substantial effort but anything worth while in life does take effort.

On completion of my studies, the combination of business experience and an MRes in Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control were seen as key factors in obtaining my post as Project Officer for a 3 year funded technology transfer project that aims to encourage the uptake of the latest technological developments by small and medium sized businesses within the Loch Lomond and National Park area. The project covers 5 sectors which include green tourism and sustainable construction which has utilised my knowledge in waste management, EIA and air pollution not to mention my previous business experience. Helping businesses and putting together projects is extremely rewarding as it has a direct effect on small companies which would not normally have had interaction with a university.

I am now at the stage that I want to extend my knowledge as I found that the MRes is a fantastic stage towards a PhD. The relationships built at Strathclyde University and the help I have received made the decision so much easier. I know it is going to be a long struggle especially as I'll be working full time too, but I sincerely believe that if the support is there, then I'll succeed.

496.jpg My name is Arthit Sakultantimetha and I am from Bangkok in Thailand and two years ago I had no idea where Glasgow was! However my supervisor from Strathclyde was visiting Kasetsart University and gave a talk on postgraduate courses within the David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability at Strathclyde University.

I chose to study IPPC on the advice of my supervisor in Bangkok who has had links with Strathclyde for many years now. Also I feel that this is an area of environmental concern that is continuing to grow. The reputation of the department at Strathclyde is extremely good and more people from my country are choosing to come here. Indeed the university has a Thai Society which hosts events throughout the year.

My year of MRes in Pollution Control has given me an excellent background to the problem, not just through classwork but my project involved fieldwork with sampling and analysis. I came onto the course as a Chemist but left as a Microbiologist!

I was lucky enough to be awarded a Faculty Scholarship so I am staying another 3 years to complete a PhD. I am really happy about this as it means I get to continue at Strathclyde where I am guaranteed the excellent support of the academic staff and maybe another chance to sight the Loch Ness Monster!

From my experience, I would recommend this course and this Department, but why not apply and see for yourself!

MRes Studentships in Collaboration with Industry - 10 Awards

The Department of Civil Engineering/DLCS is offering up to 10 funded studentships for its MRes courses involving strategic collaboration with industry. Funding will cover full tuition fees for home/EU students and partial tuition fees for overseas students.
An MRes is a Masters by Research Degree, which involves 33% Taught Content and 67% Research Project. Whilst an MRes is a standalone postgraduate degree, on successful completion of the MRes research project it is possible for good quality researchers to transfer to the PhD Programme (i.e. the MRes would be equivalent to the first year of the PhD).Students are sought to undertake research projects with the British Geological Survey, Scottish Water and Parsons Brinckerhoff. The MRes courses are aimed principally at graduates in civil and environmental engineering, earth sciences, bioscience, chemistry and chemical engineering who wish to build on their undergraduate studies and improve their career prospects. However the programme has also been successfully completed by others from an unrelated background such as business. The courses are also designed for employees of public and private sector companies who wish to upgrade their skills to be able to tackle the complex issues relating to sustainable development, and to design engineering options for sustainable development.
