Student Profile

Ogechi Okelu

I had considered several schools but the marketing programme at the University of Strathclyde was highly ranked and Strathclyde Business School was highly recommended. Also, the application process was seamless, timely and professional which was really impressive. Furthermore, Glasgow is referred to as one of the friendliest places in the world which is in line with the popular Glasgow saying ‘People Make Glasgow’. This was also quite motivating.

Despite the negative impact of the pandemic on attending physical classes, the online live classes were very engaging and interactive. My passion for strategy formulation was further increased after attending the strategic marketing classes by Dr Aliakbar Jafari and Professor Iain Davies. The classes were very practical and involved the use of case studies in the application of theoretical concepts.

The Marketing Works project which was supervised by Dr. Michael Mark was beneficial in further developing my project management, team management and presentation skills. I initially had some concerns regarding the digital marketing course but the smooth delivery of the classes by Dr Kyle Andrews allayed these concerns. Furthermore, being supervised by Dr Eleni Tsougkou made the dissertation progress seamlessly.

In addition to Strathclyde lecturers delivering classes, we were exposed to guest lecturers who are industry experts and this provided insights into industry trends and the application of theoretical concepts in the work environment. As a Strathclyde student, I got to interact with students from different backgrounds, cultures and interests. Also, as a student ambassador, I was given the opportunity to further develop my communication skills. Although, unfortunately, we did not get to have physical interactions with lecturers and students due to the pandemic, being part of the January intake, which was a smaller cohort, made it easier to interact and communicate.

I currently run a business in Nigeria in addition to offering management consulting services. However, I hope to further progress in my academic pursuit and so the marketing degree would be beneficial in my skills development, career advancement and academic pursuit. I would gladly recommend the University of Strathclyde to anyone with an interest in learning in an environment where professionalism is groomed, skills are developed in addition to academic advancement.
