Course Description

About the course

This degree makes you eligible to apply for HCPC registration as a qualified social worker in the UK. The academic side of the course is rigorous and challenging. You’ll develop a clear understanding of the theory. Through work placements, you’ll become a confident, skilled practitioner.

Where your masters can take you

Our graduates are academics, researchers and health and social care professionals. Others become managers or administrators in the public and private sectors.

How we teach

Our teaching is rigorous and research-led. We encourage you to think critically, to learn research techniques and develop transferable skills. We also help you to develop the personal attributes that will make you highly employable. The department is a friendly place, where staff and postgraduates work together as colleagues.

Our interdisciplinary approach brings together sociologists, social policy analysts, social workers and social anthropologists. Our empirical research is internationally recognised. We make significant contributions to policy debates.

Course content

Taught modules can include: Readiness for Practice Placement; Law and Policy for Social Work; Social Work Practice – Context; Value and Skills; Human Growth and Development Through the Life Course for Social Workers; Safeguarding in Social Work Practice; Skills for Social Work Practice; Social Work Professional Development.

You’ll go on two placements with local agencies, each one lasting 100 days.

Teaching and assessment

You’ll learn through lectures, small-group work, individual and group projects, supervised dissertation. You will be assessed on essays, group project work, peer assessment, group and individual presentations, examination and dissertation.

Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme - No. of awards TBC

The University of Sheffield is offering a number of Postgraduate Taught Scholarships to self funded full and part time students who are liable to pay fees at the home rate and starting their studies in 2014. You do not need to wait for your undergraduate degree classification to apply for a scholarship.This is part of a Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) initiative aimed at removing barriers to postgraduate education for students from under-represented groups such as those from low income backgrounds and who wouldn’t ordinarily consider going onto postgraduate study for reasons such as access to finance, have caring responsibilities or who come from areas where it is not usual to go to university at all. The University welcomes applications from recent graduates and students who graduated several years ago. Each applicant will be considered for all awards that are applicable but will only be eligible to receive one.The Faulty of Social Science has a number of Scholarships available for UK and EU students starting their postgraduate course in 2014. If you’re eligible, you could take your PG course at Sheffield for FREE.The deadline for applications is 6th June 2014.Benefactors Scholarships20 awards each worth £7,500 available to University of Sheffield graduatesIf you’re a current Sheffield student or a graduate of the University, and you received a maintenance grant for your undergraduate degree, you can apply. These scholarships aren’t course-specific. All taught postgraduate courses are eligible. The money can be used towards tuition fees and living costs.

Entry Requirements

A 2:1 honours degree. We can accept a 2:2 if you have a lot of relevant work experience, which can include voluntary work. English language requirements: overall IELTS grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component, or equivalent.
