Siyu Chen

Siyu Chen's precious year at Sheffield gave her the knowledge and experience to continue her studies at PhD level and win scholarship funding.

"Hello, everyone! I am Siyu Chen and I am a graduate of the University of Sheffield with MA Global Journalism. At present, I am studying for a PhD at the Centre for Women’s Studies, the University of York and my research area is about media and gender.

"I really appreciate the precious year I spent at the Department of Journalism Studies in Sheffield because I gained a lot. From 2017 to 2018, I mastered a lot of news theory knowledge, analysed a lot of impressive news reports, and more importantly, I met many responsible teachers and lovely classmates.

"Here, I not only won the valuable International Journalism Week competition opportunity and achieved a good result of the second prize, but also served as a poster translator for our International Journalism Week. These small achievements provided me with a valuable foundation for applying for a doctoral degree and helped me get a fully funded scholarship from the University of York.

For those who want to apply for MA Global Journalism at the University of Sheffield, I must say that you are making a wise choice! I hope that you can make full use of your precious time at the Department of Journalism Studies. Let a variety of courses bring you a broad perspective on journalism and help you get a brighter future."

Chi Zhang

Graduated in 2021

Before studying an MA in Global Journalism, Chi worked at a university in China. She is now studying for her PhD at the University of Leeds.

"The Department of Journalism Studies of the University of Sheffield has an excellent reputation in the UK. In the Department, we also enjoy excellent facilities and resources. The curriculum in Global Journalism is diverse and has an international perspective.

"In the workshops, I could apply theoretical knowledge to practise, master the knowledge of news writing in-depth, and receive lots of feedback. At the same time, I met many kind and responsible teachers! We could book their office hours to discuss academic issues with them - each of us was assigned a private tutor, and we could discuss any life and study issues with them. I still remember the conversation with my personal tutor when I was under pressure for my graduation thesis. The experience of studying Global Journalism is invaluable, as I have mastered professional theoretical knowledge and improved my ability of academic and independent thinking.

I have to say, I was fascinated by events set up by MA Global Journalism. International Journalism Week definitely deserves our attention! This is a high-level discussion led by media professionals, researchers and activists from around the world. Through International Journalism Week, I had the opportunity to communicate with journalists and scholars in the professional field, and even established connections with some of them on social media! I participated in the group competition and won third place. In addition, the department often invited scholars to give us lectures.

The experience of studying Global Journalism is invaluable, as I have mastered professional theoretical knowledge and improved my ability of academic and independent thinking.

"I used to work in a university in China. Now I am doing my PhD at the School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds. My research area focuses on fan studies and feminism.

If you want to learn about international journalism, you won’t regret coming here. In Sheffield, you can have a comfortable study and living experience. In the Department of Journalism Studies, you will meet professional teachers, enthusiastic administrators, and friendly classmates. Even after graduation, you’ll be amazed at how strong the Department’s alumni network is!"
