Course Description

About the course

This course prepares you for a career as a statistician. You’ll learn how to solve practical statistical problems and develop personal skills including presentation and time management. This course is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society.

Your career

Our graduates go into finance, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. They work for government agencies and research institutes with major organisations such as First Direct, GlaxoSmithKline, Marks and Spencer, the Government Statistical Service and Medical Research Council units. Our courses can also prepare you for PhD-level research.

About us

Our academics are in demand. They are members of international societies and organisations, and they speak at conferences around the world. They bring new ideas into the classroom so you can see how research is improving on existing approaches. Our solar scientists were the first to record musical sounds created by vibrations in the sun’s atmosphere.

Our Statistical Services Unit works with industry, commerce and the public sector. The services they provide include consultancy, training courses and computer software development.

Different ways to study

You can study full-time over a year or part-time over two to three years via online distance learning. The MSc Mathematics is only available as a full-time course.

Studentships

You may be able to get funding from the University or an external company. Course-specific studentships may also be available. You should apply for these as soon as possible.

Core modules

Data Analysis; Statistical Laboratory; Linear Models; Dependent Data; Inference; Sampling, Design and Medical Statistics.

Teaching and assessment

There are lectures, tutorials and computing sessions. You’ll do group work, presentations and role play. Most statistics lectures are recorded so you can watch them again later.

The distance learning option is taught online with support via email and phone. Distance learners also come to the University for residential weeks. You’re assessed by exams, project work and a dissertation.

I really enjoyed the medical statistics modue - it's something I'd really like to pursue after I've finished the masters. We all have our own desks in the Msc room - its our little home! Wen we have a lot of work to do we can spend all day in here, the atmosphere i good and we can help each other out if anyone gets stuck.

Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme - No. of awards TBC

The University of Sheffield is offering a number of Postgraduate Taught Scholarships to self funded full and part time students who are liable to pay fees at the home rate and starting their studies in 2014. You do not need to wait for your undergraduate degree classification to apply for a scholarship.This is part of a Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) initiative aimed at removing barriers to postgraduate education for students from under-represented groups such as those from low income backgrounds and who wouldn’t ordinarily consider going onto postgraduate study for reasons such as access to finance, have caring responsibilities or who come from areas where it is not usual to go to university at all. The University welcomes applications from recent graduates and students who graduated several years ago. Each applicant will be considered for all awards that are applicable but will only be eligible to receive one.The Faulty of Science has a number of Scholarships available. We’re offering postgraduate scholarships of up to £10,000 for UK and EU students starting masters courses in 2014. If you’re eligible, you could take your masters at Sheffield for FREE.The deadline for applications is 6th June 2014.
Benefactors Scholarships20 awards each worth £7,500 available to University of Sheffield graduatesIf you’re a current Sheffield student or a graduate of the University, and you received a maintenance grant for your undergraduate degree, you can apply. These scholarships aren’t course-specific. All taught postgraduate courses are eligible. The money can be used towards tuition fees and living costs.

Applicants must meet one or more of the following widening participation criteria: - Entered University from a Care background.
- Carer for an ill or disabled family member.
- Have been in receipt of Disabled Students Allowance.

- Come from one of the most deprived areas of the country as defined by the government's IMD (Indices of Multiple Deprivation) database. Entry Requirements

Minimum 2:1 honours degree with substantial mathematical and statistical components or a pass at an equivalent level in the Graduate Certificate. English language requirements: overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.
