MClinDent Dental Public Health

Course Description

Enhance your understanding of dental public health and the major oral health problems of a community. You’ll learn how to analyse problems to develop practical solutions that protect and promote the public’s oral health. Your study will include health services research and how to apply key findings in dental public health practice.

Core modules

Introduction to Public Health; Dental Public Health: foundations and theory; Health Promotion; Dental Public Health: application and critique; Introduction to Statistics; Sociology of Health and Illness; Current Concepts in Dentistry; Dissertation.

Your second year involves a placement in a local NHS dental public health department, where you’ll receive training in applied dental public health. You’ll create a portfolio of the work you complete.


Lectures, small group work, independent study and applied research dissertation. Parts of the course are taught with other disciplines and students from other programmes. This creates a rich and lively environment for your learning.

Entry Requirements

The course is suitable if you have a dental or other health-related background. You need a recognised dental degree, a 2:1 honours degree, or a relevant professional qualification with at least one year’s experience. English language requirements: overall IELTS grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.
