MA / PG Dip TESOL and Applied Linguistics


Course Description

This course will give you an excellent grounding in the central areas of linguistics and includes a foundation in applied language study. You will also focus on the practical and theoretical aspects of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). While you are with us, you’ll follow a study programme designed for professional development, including seminars, site visits and opportunities for informal teaching practice. Work experience is preferred, but not required

Course detail

This course combines theoretical insights in English language teaching (ELT) and learning with practical applications to specified contexts.

Format

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical classes, student-led seminars, discussion of research papers, interactive group work and student discovery, analysis, reflection and evaluation. Self-access work also features on the programme.

Full-time study requires full–time attendance over a 12 month period (October to September). Part-time study allows students to complete the course over three years. There is no distance learning option for the course.

Semester 1

You will take two core modules.

- Language Structure and Use (30 credits)
- Second Language Learning and Teaching

Semester 2

You will take two core modules.

- Materials and Technology
- Research Methods for TESOL and Applied Linguistics (30 credits)

Semester 3

For the full Masters qualification a dissertation is required (12-15,000 words)

Assessment

Assessment is through a combination of of essay based and practical coursework, the application of theory to practical settings and students’ own teaching and learning contexts, data analysis and problem solving, materials development and/or critique projects, mini-research projects and critical evaluation of published research.

Career Prospects

Graduates of this course frequently go on to work as English language teachers, directors of studies and education managers in schools, colleges and universities. Employers of our previous graduates include the University of Liverpool, the University of Manchester, various other universities across the globe, state schools, private language schools, further education colleges, education agencies. Some students may go on to further study by research (MPhil), or a doctorate (PhD).

Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships - 18 Awards

The School will be offering eighteen Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships of £1000 for use towards the payment of fees in the first year of study on the relevant programme. Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships are awarded in open competition to the eighteen most academically qualified self-sponsored UK/EU applicants.Consideration for the award of Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships will be made on the basis of applications for postgraduate study made before 30 June 2009. You will normally be informed whether your application has been successful by 18 July 2009.

Eligibility

Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships apply to self-sponsored EU/home students and are awarded to the most academically qualified applicants for these programmes. Applicants must be holding a place on one of the eligible programmes by 30 June 2009.
Like all the School's scholarships, Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships are not applicable to sponsored students and cannot be combined with other School or University scholarships except the PG Italian Bursary.

Application Procedure

All self-sponsored students who meet the criteria for the scheme will automatically be considered for a PG Excellence Scholarship. There is no need to express an interest or complete a further application form in order to be considered.

International Excellence Scholarship - 20+ Awards

Our prestigious International Excellence Scholarship is intended to reward applicants to our postgraduate courses who have demonstrated excellence through their academic results. They are awarded Awarded on academic merit only. The award of an Excellence Scholarship takes the form of a reduction in the tuition fee payable; it is not a cash award. All other expenses, including the remainder of the tuition fees, and travel/ living expenses shall remain the responsibility of the successful applicant.

Eligibility

International applicants for taught postgraduate programmes in the School of Languages will automatically be considered for an International Excellence Scholarship worth £1,000 and awarded by the University of Salford.These awards are only available to students paying overseas fees.Applicants must be available to take up your programme place based on the following dates: September 2009 or January / February 2010 (depending when programmes commence).

Application Procedure

There is no need to complete a further application. When the University has received your final academic results it will write to you to confirm if you have been awarded a scholarship.

Entry Requirements

A good, relevant honours degree such as education, languages, or linguistics. In some cases a diploma is acceptable OR a good honours degree in any academic subject together with a Grade C or above in an accredited TEFL-initiating qualification (Trinity Certificate TESOL/ Cambridge ESOL CELTA only). Two references are required with applications.
