Design and Management of Sustainable Built Environments (MSc)

Course Description

Our aim is to understand the design and management of modern built environments in order to meet carbon emission reduction targets.

The course is ideal for professionals in the built environment including urban planners, architects, building services engineers, facilities managers and performance assessors. The challenges facing those who work in the sector include the fragmentation of disciplines in built environments.

This course considers how these challenges can be addressed through the acquisition of key practical skills in analysis and simulation of technical issues in environmental design, engineering and management. The distinctive focus is on a truly interdisciplinary approach to the design and operation of sustainable buildings and cities.

MSc in Design and Management of Sustainable Built Environments is accredited as meeting the further learning requirements for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

This course has been labelled by Climate-KIC – a Knowledge and Innovation Community that works with existing and relevant Master’s courses to enhance them with complementary learning.

What career can you have?

Graduates will be ideally placed to be employed in a number of emerging roles in technical leadership positions relating to the sustainable design of buildings and structures, sustainable management and operation of facilities etc.
In a construction sector that is increasingly called upon to create a sustainable built environment, graduates will also follow careers in a wide range of traditional construction-related vocations such as urban planning, architectural design, environmental engineering, facilities management, building energy operation, green building assessment and roles in the public sector or client organisations. Graduates may also work for firms delivering engineering technology consultancy to the construction sector or for sustainable building services engineering within construction design teams.

You are normally required to have a good undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent from a university outside the UK). If you have other qualifications and a number of years' relevant work experience then you may also be eligible to apply.
