Michael McDonagh

205.jpg Michael McDonagh, is a Detective Chief Superintendent for the Metropolitan Police. He runs the Operational Command Unit within the Specialist Operations Business Group and has just completed an MA in Business Management.
Several of my colleagues had recommended the University of Portsmouth as it is a well established provider of further education to the police force. I chose the Learning at Work Partnership Programme because the flexibility of the course suited my lifestyle due to busy work and family commitments.
The Master’s in Business Management has helped me to use knowledge and structures from the academic arena and place them firmly into real-world project management, which has been invaluable to my career development.
I have especially enjoyed the conference days on the course where I have had the opportunity to meet like-minded people and was also delighted to discover that I have been made a 'fellow' of the Institute of Leadership and Management, which I achieved through the research undertaken on this course.
I joined the police in 1986 and haven't looked back. I really enjoy my job and it has been great to gain additional academic qualifications while continuing to work. My only problem now is what to do next – I have been getting up at six every Saturday morning in order to study before my children get up. Now I will miss the challenge of juggling work, study and family commitments. I now look forward to carrying out research into the area of leadership and management with a view of engaging in further academic studies or writing a book

Tina Tompkins

214.jpg Tina Tompkins, completed a Masters in Business and Management. She now works as a Lead Commissioning Manager responsible for service redesign and organisational change within the NHS.
I've been able to take on a much more senior position since gaining my Masters degree. It's raised my professional game and totally changed my way of thinking. It's also given me a huge confidence boost which has been invaluable.
Previously I was an accountant working for Fareham and Gosport Primary Care Group, but I was bored with my job and things were changing rapidly within the organisation. I decided having a business qualification would increase my employability if I wanted or needed to change roles in the future.
I chose to study with the Partnership Programme because of its flexibility and being able to fit it around my job. Working long hours meant I needed something which would allow me to study when I could do it rather than being tied into lecture times.
I was able to put together my own syllabus made up of taught units, projects based on my job and even previous work and it means you can work to your strengths. You agree a contract with your tutor about what you will achieve within certain timescales.
The support from my tutor was absolutely excellent, we met up regularly and he helped me put a shape to what I needed to deliver. Never having done an undergraduate degree it really helped knowing there was someone there to help at anytime I needed it. And the contract is flexible enough to allow you to change a deadline if circumstances mean you need to.
My family thought I was absolutely mad but they were very supportive. You need that support structure because working and studying can be very demanding. It was the graduation ceremony which made me realise what I'd achieved in two years, and how my hard work has paid off. I've been asked if I want to do a PhD next but I'll need to think about that!
