Non-Medical Prescribing (MSc/PgDip/PgCert)


Course Description

The School of Healthcare Sciences’ Advanced Practice programme offers students their choice of generic and specialist pathways, providing the opportunity to explore their specialist areas of practice and obtain a degree of relevant title within the MSc in Advanced Practice programme.

The information provided below relates to the specialist Non-Medical Prescribing pathway. It can either be undertaken as a stand-alone Postgraduate Certificate, or as part of the MSc Advanced Practice Non-Medical Prescribing.

The programme is designed to prepare nurses and midwives to practise as Independent Prescribers and allied health professionals to practice as Supplementary Prescribers, meeting standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The programme develops the students' critical analysis and personal reflection skills, preparing them for lifelong professional development.

Special Features

• The Cardiff Non-Medical Prescribing programme is designed to prepare nurses, midwives, pharmacists and allied health professionals to practise as Independent/Supplementary Prescribers as above and to meet the relevant standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB), and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
• The programme develops the critical analysis and personal reflection skills of course participants and prepares them for lifelong professional development.
• Offers knowledge and expertise for nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, radiographers and podiatrists to develop prescribing practice within a clinical setting.

Eligible programmes include taught full-time and part-time taught programmes leading to a master's. Not included are our distance learning programmes and taught programmes leading to a postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma, as well as research master's such as the MPhil and MRes.‘Home’ and ‘EU’ students only (as classified for fee paying purposes, tuition fee status is determined after submitting an application to study) who are accepted on to an eligible postgraduate taught programme leading to a master's degree, and with a firm focus on academic excellence.For applicants from countries outside the European Union, we also offer a range of highly prestigious international scholarships.

Application Procedure

We have two deadlines after which scholarship decisions will be made:6 April and 27 July 2016.The Masters Excellence Scholarship application form can be accessed once you have submitted an application to study to an eligible postgraduate taught programme leading to a master’s degree.
