Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy (MSc/PgDip)

Course Description

The aims of the Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy programme at the School of Healthcare Sciences are to develop students’ evaluative, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to increase their practical and theoretical knowledge of sports science and injury, so that they can apply these skills in the further advancement of their profession.

This programme has evolved since its creation in 1999, with the aim of developing sports physiotherapy practitioners capable of working at specialist level within their field.

The course was created -and is regularly reviewed- with involvement from national organisations such as the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine and international organisations such as the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy (IFSPT). It also evolves to incorporate student feedback.

Learning outcomes have been structured to facilitate development towards ACPSM Gold standard level, using competencies defined by IFSP, as well as the knowledge, skills and behaviours that will help physiotherapists pursue a career in sport and exercise. The course is suited to individuals working in a wide variety of sectors that involve managing people with sport or exercise related injuries, whether this is at High Performance Sport level or in a physiotherapy clinic that provides these services as part of their remit.

• External lecturers who are leaders in their field

Hanan Khalil (MSc Physiotherapy)

The MSc in Physiotherapy course was a great experience for me.
I especially appreciated the method of teaching academic study to
the postgraduate students where you can improve and develop your research abilities. The supportive teaching atmosphere and the ability to access a vast collection of information from the libraries helped me greatly. My research results were accepted for presentation as a poster in a conference and I have now had a paper accepted for the Journal Physical Therapy.

Monica Busse (Physiotherapy)

"I wanted to continue with my postgraduate studies so that I can develop the necessary research skills. Doing a PhD in my particular area will help me to continue my academic and professional development. In the Research Centre for Clinical Kinaesiology (Department of Physiotherapy Education), I have found the staff to be very supportive and friendly. Cardiff is a great city to live in and the outdoor activities are an added bonus."
