Medical Education (e-learning) (PgCert/PgDip/MSc)


Course Description

The course aims to offer knowledge and expertise to enable participants to design, deliver and evaluate courses and curricula for health professionals. It advances participants' awareness of educational innovations, theories and methods, and enhances their skills to implement and manage change and critically reflect on their educational activities.

This e-learning course aims to produce competent, reflective and self-managing medical educators. Participants can expect to:

* Achieve a sound knowledge and understanding of principles and practice of adult learning
* Relate knowledge and understanding to practitcal educational needs in the health professions
* Develop professional skills in applying educational knowledge to practice

The Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert), Diploma (PgDip) and MSc in Medical Education form an e-learning course offering build up of study credit via a three-stage progressive course, delivered online. The course will improve participants' understanding of educational principles and approaches and their ability to apply them in educational contexts. This course will appeal to those who wish to have a flexible approach to study at a distance and who also have access to good internet facilities.

The course has contributed significantly to my teaching role as a surgical practitioner in many ways. The teaching techniques I have learned have dramatically changed my approach to education delivery in all aspects of my working life. I see training opportunities at many more varied levels and situations and am learning methods to exploit these in productive and imaginative ways. The feedback from students is extremely positive. I began the course as an enthusiastic yet unconsciously unskilled teacher, but now feel my enthusiasm has been harnessed and directed towards meaningful competency that will result in life-long educational skills which I will be able to give back to future generations. Training has become an exciting, innovative aspect of my working life rather than a chore and I can only thank the Medical Education course for this.

"For my research project, the final part of the MSc course, I chose to evaluate the PgDip/MSc Pain Management course, which I was developing as part of my role as a lecturer within the Department of Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine. I chose to evaluate the course from a qualitative perspective as during previous courses, I had only undertaken quantitative research. The fact that the assignments and dissertation could be tailored to facilitate changes in practice was very valuable. The successful completion of the MSc in Medical Education led to a personal promotion to that of a senior lecturer and through my endeavours at improving pain management through education, I won Welsh Woman of the Year."

Eligibility

Eligible programmes include taught full-time and part-time taught programmes leading to a master's. Not included are our distance learning programmes and taught programmes leading to a postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma, as well as research master's such as the MPhil and MRes.‘Home’ and ‘EU’ students only (as classified for fee paying purposes, tuition fee status is determined after submitting an application to study) who are accepted on to an eligible postgraduate taught programme leading to a master's degree, and with a firm focus on academic excellence.For applicants from countries outside the European Union, we also offer a range of highly prestigious international scholarships.

We have two deadlines after which scholarship decisions will be made:

6 April and 27 July 2016.

Entry Requirements

The course is suitable for all health professionals who have teaching, assessment and related educational responsibilities, such as teachers, trainers, educational supervisors, course co-ordinators, clinical and college tutors.Applicants should also hold an initial degree from an approved University, or other qualification/proof of educational ability.
