Social Science Research Methods (MSc/PgDip)

Course Description

The MSc/PgDip in Social Science Research Methods aims to provide advanced training in research methods across the full range of the social sciences. Students are provided with a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge of how to construct effective research studies, of the variety of data collection methods available to the social scientist and of the principal methods of analysing social scientific data. They are also introduced to the political and ethical frameworks within which social science research is conducted, and to some of the ways in which the results of social science research are disseminated.

The course pathways have ESRC recognition and they each provide the appropriate training basis for proceeding to a PhD. These programmes provide extensive opportunities for interdisciplinary study, the application of social research expertise for occupational career development, and the pursuit of substantive areas of interest at Masters level. The programmes also provide knowledge and expertise suitable for careers in research and development, business, market studies, public agencies at international, national and local levels, education, teaching and other public services work, and voluntary organisations.

This programme offers an opportunity to develop analytical skills, an interdisciplinary knowledge base, and a practical understanding of research fields.

Students may apply for one of the pathways through the MSc/PgDip in Social Science Research Methods.

Glynne Williams (Social Sciences)

"When I decided to do a PhD my priority was to work with a supervisor whose work I knew and respected. Cardiff is a world class centre for the social sciences and is getting better all the time. The growth of the School means that many leading figures' names I only knew from their literature are now based here. Studying here was certainly the best decision I've made."

Mike Harper (Education)

I recently retired from working in the Welsh Assembly Government’s Education Department and felt I could bring my experience to postgraduate research. I also felt that a PhD could offer me an opportunity to develop new interests and open up the possibility of a new career in research post-retirement. I am funded by a studentship sponsored by the Welsh Assembly Government through the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) Teaching and Learning Research Programme.

Pamela Robinson (Labour Governance Structures)

My decision to come and study in Cardiff was based on the knowledge and expertise of research teaching staff at this School, which most definitely stood out from other universities I had considered. To initiate a PhD research project is a huge undertaking, and I was able to benefit from the academic
insight, support and commitment from staff here, making it possible for me to develop the ideas and concepts explored in my Masters thesis, the Corporate Social Responsibility of UK Supermarkets, into the study I am engaged in today. My first
fieldwork study on banana plantations in Costa Rica was immensely rewarding and I returned with huge amounts of data, an incredible experience which my supervisors helped orchestrate. My studies here have influenced the way I see my career developing and I very much hope to be able to continue researching labour inequalities in global supply chains in the future.
