Sustainable Energy and Environment (MSc)

Course Description

The multidisciplinary programme considers both alternative energy sources and the effective management of traditional fuels and energy systems, integrating this study with environmental/waste issues.

The structure of the course is based on three main themes: Energy Supply, Energy Demand and Management. The course is delivered primarily through three Schools within Cardiff University: Engineering, the Welsh School of Architecture and Earth, Ocean and Planetary Sciences, though there will be contributions from other schools and external industrial lectures to enhance the learning experience.

The course aims to provide a balanced training across this broad field, notably providing a balance between the renewable and fossil fuel generation aspects, as well as encompassing the role of various industrial sectors (electrical power generation and distribution, built environment, transport, industry, etc.). A significant feature is the integrated, lifecycle approach to energy and environmental issues.

The programme is divided into 3 semesters, with increasingly more research-based learning and group projects in the second semester, culminating with an individual project in the final semester. Most projects will be associated with an industrial sponsor, taking full advantage of the strong industrial research collaborations existing within participating Schools. Students will select 2 modules from a group of options, allowing some degree of specialisation, and providing exposure to the frontiers of research in these areas.

Topics covered on the course include:
Sustainable Energy and Environmental Case Study
Energy Management
Risk and Hazard Management
Energy Studies
Hydro Environmental Modelling
Alternative Energy Systems
Waste Management and Recycling
Fuels and Energy Systems
Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer

Alan Smith (MSc Geoenvironmental engineering)

I chose to return to postgraduate study in order to get an edge in the job market. Geoenvironmental engineering is a growing field and I feel this type of specialist MSc will really enhance my career prospects. The course itself is very diverse and students benefit, in particular, from the School’s strong network of contacts in industry. I was also fortunate enough to secure funding for my postgraduate study from the EPSRC.

Matt Chapman

I have found that taking the Electrical Energy Systems MSc has given me a much greater appreciation of engineering fundamentals in the wider context of the power industry. I believe that the skills obtained from undertaking this course has set me up perfectly for a career involving power systems networks, renewable energy, and even the aerospace industry. On top of this, it has probably been my most enjoyable year at university.

“I chose Cardiff as the Engineering school has a great reputation. The information, advice and tour provided by the University were really useful and helped me make my mind up. Cardiff School of Engineering is research driven and incredibly successful which has a positive knock–on effect to undergraduate students. We are taught about the most up-to-date techniques and methods. The lecturers are really approachable and pleased to help. I give the quality of life 10/10; I have had the time of my life at Cardiff, Great fun!!! Great life! Great people and a Great University!”
