The course will allow people to develop expertise in new and evolving areas, such as advanced microwave computer aided design and communication systems engineering. The course will cover laboratory time and advanced engineering management alongside modules in HF and RF engineering, signal processing, advanced microwave CAD, fabrication and testing, advanced communication systems, advanced communication networks and non-linear RF designs and concepts. This will complement the acquisition of skills in business and entrepreneurship.
The structure of the course is twelve modules taught over seven months, followed by a five month industrially related project within the field.
Applicants to the MSc programme will have the opportunity to make an additional application to the Alacrity Foundation. If successful, the five month industrial project will be based within the Foundation at Newport and attract a tax free stipend of £13,800 from month nine of their MSc programme. Participants will then be required to commit to the Alacrity programme for an additional fifteen months.
Applicants who do not join Alacrity will be offered projects supported by Cardiff Business School.
Alacrity provides successful candidates the opportunity to join the Foundation’s ‘boot camp’. The Alacrity ‘boot camp’ is a proven methodology for commercialising technology and for creating successful companies. Alacrity projects are at the leading edge of technology and offer opportunities for new standards to be created, new methods and processes to be developed and the potential for the patenting of products. Students will have a unique opportunity to work on innovative projects using the latest software development tools and methodologies requiring creative problem solving. Graduates have the opportunity to transform innovative project ideas (sourced from global industry partners) into market-leading products and to be founders of a start-up company.
Graduates will have the opportunity to work in areas such as: - designing mobile apps for iPhone/iPad and Android devices amongst other platforms - developing rich graphical interfaces and video/image streaming and processing - machine to machine (M2M) and inter process communications - speech recognition and synthesis - cloud services development - cyber security
Subject matter of the projects will be focused primarily on software, targeting technology areas including telecommunications, cloud services and mobile applications -areas for which the Foundation’s industry partners have the most influence in global markets. The relationship with industrial partners is what makes Alacrity’s internship unique and exceptional as projects that are customer driven with a high probability of success will trigger the incorporation of a start-up company. Successful graduates will have an equity stake in the company and most importantly will have access to venture capital funding.
The project work is varied and intellectually challenging and it may require you to learn new languages and techniques. The added bonus is that your application will likely be used by many thousands of people. You will have the opportunity to see how the software and products that you create will impact across a vast range of market sectors.
Participants who are successful with their MSc will gain real world technology product development experience, learn best practices and build an exceptional network from seasoned and successful entrepreneurs. Skills and knowledge are gained in a variety of business and technology disciplines that equip the participants to manage the operations of a new technology company upon project completion. Alacrity applicants will require at least twenty four months visa entitlement from the start of the MSc.
The MSc in Communication Technology and Entrepreneurship is supported by academic staff from the School of Engineering and the Cardiff Business School.
