International Journalism (MA)


Course Description

The course offers the opportunity to gain a perspective on 21st century journalism in different media and in different countries. It offers a mix of practice and theory, techniques and advanced academic study.

The taught component of the course amounts to 120 credits. Students complete this across two semesters (Autumn and Spring) from the end of September to the beginning of June. Students are then required to submit a dissertation at the end of August. The dissertation carries 60 credits.

This degree offers practical journalism, but remains an academic Masters degree. The practical working environment within the degree aims to deepen professional knowledge and challenge understandings. Students choose to specialise in broadcast, documentary, magazine or newspaper.

* Information Gathering and Analysis I and II covering investigative journalism techniques and academic research methods
* International News Production I and II (with pathways in Broadcasting, Magazine, Newspaper and Documentary)

Eligible programmes include taught full-time and part-time taught programmes leading to a master's. Not included are our distance learning programmes and taught programmes leading to a postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma, as well as research master's such as the MPhil and MRes.‘Home’ and ‘EU’ students only (as classified for fee paying purposes, tuition fee status is determined after submitting an application to study) who are accepted on to an eligible postgraduate taught programme leading to a master's degree, and with a firm focus on academic excellence.For applicants from countries outside the European Union, we also offer a range of highly prestigious international scholarships.

We have two deadlines after which scholarship decisions will be made:6 April and 27 July 2016.The Masters Excellence Scholarship application form can be accessed once you have submitted an application to study to an eligible postgraduate taught programme leading to a master’s degree. Entry Requirements

Suitable for aspiring journalists, mid-career practitioners and graduates wishing to deepen their understanding of journalism.Applicants should possess a higher education degree of at least lower second class honours (2:2), or a non-UK qualification recognised by the University as being equivalent to this. This requirement may be waived for candidates with relevant professional qualifications or experience.
