The MSc in Work and Organisational Psychology will be of interest to those, in the UK and abroad, who wish to develop a career in organisational psychology or related areas such as human-resource management. This course provides an excellent opportunity for postgraduate education for students from a variety of backgrounds interested in this area who do not have the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and who may not have a psychology background.
The course has been designed to provide you with knowledge of the main areas of occupational psychology, to provide you with good research skills, to cover the relevant social psychological and organisational issues and to introduce the skills required in practice.
The course utilises a range of teaching methods (including seminars, tutorials, workshops, self-managed working groups). Through our comprehensive programme, which includes workshops on Consultancy Skills and opportunities for British Psychological Society's Test User Qualifications, you will have the facility to develop practical skills fundamental to your future career development.

- We are committed to promoting the contribution of applied psychology to occupational and public health and safety and to the development of successful and healthy organisations and communities. - While it shares modules with the MSc in Occupational Psychology and MSc in Management Psychology, the MSc in Work and Organisational Psychology emphasises the organisational aspects of the discipline and students have more choice over modules. - Our teaching is informed by current research. The decision to apply to the MSc program in Work and Organisational Psychology at the University of Nottingham was an easy one. Reading online that the university is ranked as one of the World’s Top 75 universities, and that it boasts the Division of Psychiatry and Applied Psychology, specifically devoted to the academic study and applied practice of Work Psychology, sealed the deal that the university would be my top choice to help develop my career in Occupational Psychology.
However, my experience as a post-grad student at Nottingham far surpassed my expectations. The MSc program consists of well-organised and well-paced modules taught by knowledgeable academics and practitioners who are recognised in the field for their current research and contributions to applied psychology. Interacting with faculty members, academic staff, guest lecturers and practitioners who are all passionate about research and applying the best practices towards fostering and maintaining a healthy and motivated workforce made me excited to make my own distinct contribution to research.
But aside from this great balance between high-quality teaching and research, and the top-notch facilities at the Institute, the most enriching feature of my experience proved to be the international characteristics of the University that are evident in every aspect of university life. The opportunities to meet people and learn about new cultures, whether in the classroom, the Student Union clubs, or the social clubs that come alive every weekend, gave me a greater appreciation for the wide world we live in and how diverse we are, and in my year there I gained friends from almost every corner of the world. Notts Uni (as it is fondly known), its beautiful campus, and the surrounding student-populated town, gave me not only an internationally-recognised qualification in Work and Organisational Psychology, but also great friends, networks and experiences that will no doubt influence more than just my career.
Choosing to do my MSc at Nottingham was not a difficult one for two primary reasons: First, the university enjoys an excellent worldwide standing which renders it competitive in terms of teaching and research. And secondly, it was Psychiatry and Applied Psychology that particularly attracted me to the University of Nottingham. Having a research institute dedicated to the study of organisational psychology with renowned faculty members prominent in research, was very compelling. I was positive that if I got onto the program, I would receive the foundation for my future career plan, be it further education or organisational work .
Throughout the year, numerous contemporary topics in the organisational psychology framework were presented and discussed which made the course enjoyable on many levels. For instance, interacting with subject matter experts made the course very intriguing and provoked in-depth thinking. It was also very beneficial to receive constant feedback from professors which further strengthened the learning process. Moreover, it was very pleasing to gain a cross-cultural approach on organisational topics where we engaged with people from all over the world and at many times, inputs were shared which unveiled alternative practices in different contexts. The course encourages you to think deeply about organisational topics and gives you the leverage to develop research skills and critical and analytical skills. This skill toolkit is fundamental to make sound judgments regarding research and best practices. All in all, I gained a solid academic foundation and a professional basis to pursue organizational work.
What maximized my graduate experience, and made it even more amazing, is living in Nottingham. Nottingham is a great student city and offers a lot for students to do. It also has a nice cultural scene. It is a cosy place where students live in close proximity to each other. This avails the opportunity to get to meet so many students and makes it very easy to make friends. Personally, I developed very close friendships with people from all over the world! I would say that Nottingham is a truly balanced place for a student.
