Master of Business Administration MBA

Course Description

The MBA programmes at Northampton Business School are carefully designed to offer in depth knowledge of all critical business areas and functions. To succeed in business, you require more than just business skills. The Master of Business Administration is a globally recognised postgraduate qualification for ambitious, motivated graduates.

This unique MBA will suit those that are aspiring business professionals without previous business or management experience but have a clear interest in and passion for Business, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship. This MBA is available to study full time or by distance learning.

Obtaining an MBA at the University of Northampton will support your career progression by developing your critical thinking and research skills which will enhance your business knowledge and understanding. The MBA will teach you the theory of effective management practice and equip you with essential skills, confidence and competence to assist you when you venture into your chosen industry. You will learn to think laterally, challenge convention and offer knowledge based solutions to business issues. You will be able to think and operate differently to your colleagues which is essential in today’s global business arena.

The MBA is great for creating and building your networks. You will study alongside ambitious graduates and have the opportunity to engage with business professionals from a range of organisations, industries and countries exchanging their experiences, insights and best practice. You will join a community of influential tutors, business professionals and MBA alumni. Current staff and past MBA students from this university span the globe and offer extensive, diverse, cross cultural business experiences.

Course content

The programme has been designed to give you a thorough understanding of business and management processes. Your assignments will focus on real-life business and management situations and will develop your strategic thinking and entrepreneurial skills.

The MBA method of teaching is participative, enabling participants to consider issues in an organisation wide or total business context. Skills in analysing business and organisational problems are emphasised, as is the ability to recognise and exploit opportunities. The development of strategies and plans for business or departmental improvement is a major theme.

As you would expect from a postgraduate degree, this programme is demanding in terms of entry, rigour and workload and will require commitment and dedication from participants.

Included as part of your course fees, you will receive a CMI Level 7 Diploma and affiliate membership throughout the programme of study and this will continue to be valid for 12 months after graduation. Please note: Only applicable to students studying full time on campus or via distance learning directly through The University of Northampton.

Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Introductory Certificate

The CIM Introductory Certificate provides an internationally recognised qualification in marketing. We provide all the materials necessary to prepare you for this award as part of your course fees. In order to achieve this award, two CIM assessments must be successfully completed in addition to your MBA study.

PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner Award

PRINCE2® (Projects in Controlled Environments) is the internationally recognised project management programme. Online learning materials are provided as part of your course fees. Additional PRINCE2 assessment must be successfully completed in addition to your MBA study.

MBA Business Event

Students will have the opportunity to participate in the MBA business event (Brussels in 2014/15) in their first year. The MBA business event is optional and the cost should not exceed £250 for flights and accommodation (If travelling from the UK). Students normally allow an additional £250 for their expenses.

Please Note: Additional fees, over and above your course fees, will be payable for the optional elements, for example for travel and accommodation for the Business Event or by the examination or membership bodies for membership and assessments associated with the qualifications.

Work Experience Opportunities

As a full time, on campus student, you can elect to participate in a Work Placement – completing the module Organisational Culture and Work Environments, instead of Business research (consultancy project). These placements can enable you to develop your skills and knowledge in a work environment, with the aim to give you an advantage over the competition for jobs and scholarships after you graduate.

Your placement would last between six and 12 months, and be appropriate to the level of study and you should also be paid. We will support you in finding and securing a placement opportunity, however it must be noted that placements are highly competitive and there is no guarantee of a placement offer being made by an employer.

Whilst on a work placement you will attend two full-day workshops held at the university, and complete a research project based on the organisation in which you are working.

If you think a work placement is not for you, or are unable to secure a placement within the first nine months of the programme, then you will be automatically transferred to our Business Research (Consultancy) Project module to gain the required credits to complete the MBA. The Business Research (Consultancy) Project module will be taught in three full day intensive workshops and supported with one to one supervision. You will have approximately three months to work on your project and will complete your MBA programme within 12 months. You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills through the taught employability skills programme, where you will be given opportunities for one-to-one support and guidance for professional and career development.

The length of study for this course is one year for those that are studying full time. Students that are taking this course part-time or through distance learning can expect the course duration to be two years.

The programme is completed by full-time study on Park campus at Northampton Business School. Normally, you will complete two semesters of 14 weeks, with between 12 and 15 hours per week in the classroom with your tutors and fellow students. You will be expected to engage in significant additional study, around 20-25 hours per week in self-directed study, learning and networking and attending additional workshops to support your achievement of the professional body memberships and awards. The full-time programme normally runs twice a year with September and January starts.

The programme is highly enterprise and business focused with an emphasis on real life business situations and problems. As such it has a mixture of assessment involving practical work, presentations, essays, reports and case studies and examinations.
