MSc Petroleum Geoscience for Exploration

Course Description

Petroleum Geoscience Centre: The Petroleum Geoscience Centre at the University of Manchester combines postgraduate MSc and PhD training, industry professional development programmes and internationally renowned research within one of the leading Earth Science Schools in the UK. Further industry scholarships will be advertised as available.

World-Class Infrastructure: Manchester University has world-class research and teaching facilities, including geochemical, sedimentological and geophysical laboratories. The Petroleum Geoscience Centre runs three workstation laboratories: two are dedicated research environments using clusters of Unix workstations, and Linux/Windows PCs running the Schlumberger GeoFrame suite, Paradigm VoxelGeo, Petrel, Kingdom Suite, GoCad, ER Mapper and Arc-Info, plus various well-log analysis packages. The third is a dedicated new teaching facility comprising a 12-workstation suite. Immersive visualization for research and training is provided at the Manchester Centre.

Established Petroleum Geoscience MSc: The course has strong links with international oil companies and a proven track record for training in exploration and production geoscience to meet the needs of the oil industry. The teaching team is led by Dr Jonathan Redfern (Director of the Petroleum Geoscience MSc who has many years experience with international oil companies) and includes leading researchers and experience petroleum geoscientists from the Basin and Stratigraphic Studies Group headed by Professor Rob Gawthorpe. There is a strong industrial component to the course with several modules taught by industry specialists and the potential to undertake research projects linked to oil companies. Modules offered include:

Geophysical Imaging and Interpretation
Petroleum Economics and Risk Analysis
Basin Analysis and Modelling
Petroleum Geochemistry
Petrophysics/Formation Evaluation
Play Fairway and Prospect Evaluation
Reservoir Characteristics and Modelling
3D Seismic Interpretation and Visualisation
Wellsite and Operations Geology
Management and Communication Skills

The course combines and emphasis on academic excellence with industrial application. Students are expected to meet rigorous academic standards and to develop key analytical expertise. Taught courses from October to April comprise lectures, practical exercises, tutorials, group projects. From May to September students specialise whilst undertaking an independant research project, often carried out within the offices of a sponsoring oil company, providing valuable work experience. Fieldwork is also an important part of the course. Three field trips are taken within the UK and one overseas field trip each year.

Careers: Graduates from this programme tend to follow career paths in the petroleum sector; with major international oil companies, service companies or the growing number of consultancies, government institutions or into the financial sector. Others have continued their studies with PhD training.

Entry Requirements: A good Honours degree in Geology, Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering or related discipline. Work experience may also be taken into account. Overseas students would also need to demonstrate competence in English language, for example, a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.

Scholarships: Funding for places on the MSc is available from oil company scholarships and University bursaries. For international students there are other schemes scuh as PTDF Nigeria (full scholarship available.

The course at Manchester has been selected as one of the target MSc’s and you are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. PESGB The Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain is offering scholarships for places on the Petroleum Geoscience MSc at Manchester. This is open to all UK/EU students, with preference to those with some oil industry experience seeking to undertake enhanced training. Scholarship (£5,000 up to £10,000).
