The MSc in Developmental Psychology focuses mainly on the social and cognitive development of children. The programme produces students who are critical and independent thinkers with specialist knowledge of the social, cognitive, mental, ethical and methodological aspects of working with children or researching children. At the end of the course students are able to recognise issues relating to child development, are able to investigate and evaluate these issues using the theories, methodologies and tools that have been made available to them, and are able to report about these issues in an informed and systematic manner at a level that makes it possible to submit their research report to a peer reviewed journal.
The MSc targets people who work or intend to work with children, and who want to support their present or future career by learning more about children’s social and cognitive development, as well as the research methods that underpin such work.
The potential job market relating to this MSc ranges from those wishing to do a PhD in social and cognitive development to those working in public, private, voluntary and community based settings (police, nurses, school teachers, social workers, youth workers, people working for Children's Services, Child Protection services, Children’s Centres, etc.).
Monday from 10.00-14.00, and Tuesday from 10.00-17.00 for full-time students. Part-time students do one of these days.
This MSc programme is open to students with at least a 2:1 at Bachelors level or an equivalent degree, or to students with a proven track record (e.g., having at least five years of work experience). All students are expected to at least have a basic qualification in mathematics that is equivalent to a C at GCSE level. An interview is normally part of the admissions procedure to make sure that student expectations match course expectations.
