The Postgraduate Certificate in Effective Middle Leadership brings together professional and academic expertise to support middle leaders in developing knowledge, understanding and skills to maximise their effectiveness as school leaders.
The course, which is a collaboration between the Association for School and College Leaders (ASCL) and the University of Leicester
, offers you unique opportunities to work with practitioners in collaboration with learning professionals from ASCL and researchers from the University's School of Education.
You will have support from peers on the course in addition to tutor-facilitated opportunities, and you will contribute to and initiate leadership-related discussions in your own setting and beyond.
We offer an optional residential weekend at the start of each module to share the aims of the module, giving you the change to meet your peers and tutors and start module activities. Similarly, there is an optional weekend study day in the second half of each module to help review progress and support your preparations for the final assessments.
You will be guided by extensive resources, a personal tutor and by working in small groups. If you're based in the UK, there may be also be opportunities to visit other schools in order to share best practice and learn to use the knowledge acquired.

This module will examine the differences between educational leadership and management and the range of roles associated with middle leadership to evaluate how middle leaders can support learning in educational settings and so contribute to school effectiveness and improvement. You will investigate how data can be used effectively and the importance of teacher collaboration. You will develop a research project design based on research questions drawn from a focused review of literature of interest and relevance to you and your setting.
In this module you will be supported in carrying out and reporting the research project designed in Module 1.
This second module offers opportunities to explore collaborative professional development (such as working in partnerships, teams and coaching) to develop skills and expertise in leading the development of others. This relates to taking a role in succession planning and capacity building.
