MSc Transport Economics

Course Description

Overview

If you are an ambitious numerate graduate, or a practitioner in the field, the Transport Economics Masters will equip you with the analytical skills for a rewarding career supporting transport policy-making at national, regional and local level.

93% of our Masters’ graduates find employment in a professional or managerial role, or continue with further studies.*

Study transport economics, as well as econometrics and cost-benefit analysis.

Develop a suite of economic skills that will help promote economic growth within a regulatory framework that minimises any damaging health and environmental impacts, whilst incentivising the best use of resources.

Expand your fluency in:
• Economic appraisal – to better understand the complex interface between transport and the wider economy
• Micro-economics – to understand pricing techniques, the importance of economic regulation and the valuation of third party costs and benefits
• Econometrics – to develop your quantitative models with real world data and test economic theories
• Independent research – opening the gateway to a career in transport research in either academia or consultancy.

And experience what it is like to be part of a project team working across numerous subject boundaries relevant to the transport sector. Through this, gain insights into how transport planning, social science, economics, environmental science, modelling and engineering can work together to design transport solutions to global challenges. This industry-inspired initiative will enable you to apply your knowledge to real world transport issues in the field.

Your colleagues will be among the best and brightest from Latin America to the Far East, from Africa to Europe and the UK. Together, you will learn economic research techniques that will help you develop transport networks that are founded on robust evidence, sustainable and equitable principles, state-of-the-art modelling, accurate data analysis, and an understanding of human psychology.

You can also study this programme as a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) qualification full or part-time – this means you’ll study the same content as the MSc but you won’t complete a dissertation.

(Student Profile)

John Buckell

1388.jpg WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO STUDY AT THE INSTITUTE FOR TRANSPORT STUDIES (ITS)?
I wanted to continue my studies and focus on economics, and Leeds seemed to be the obvious place; the university has a great reputation, the school is exemplary and the course was befitting to my interests. I was also keen on Leeds knowing it’s a young, vibrant city with a large student body.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT TRANSPORT THAT INTERESTS AND MOTIVATES YOU TO STUDY IT?
Transport’s quite unique. There are idiosyncratic quirks to it and I find finding practical solutions to them both interesting and challenging in equal measure. I like transport’s proximity to real world issues for both the short and long term. There’s a great balance between theory and application, especially on the economics side of things. I also like that it’s an industry set to be turned on its head within my lifetime. It means there’s exciting scope for progression in the field, and ITS is on the vanguard of that.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING AN ITS MASTERS STUDENT?
It’s outstanding. All facets of student life at ITS, from learning to the social aspect, have exceeded my expectations. You’re encouraged to reach your potential, and supported every step of the way. I’m genuinely happy being here, and I don’t think I’m the only person who feels that way. I like the mix of academic disciplines. I like that I have lectures with an engineer, a mathematician and an economist. It’s interesting having a range of different perspectives for a given topic.

WHAT HAVE THE LECTURES AND SEMINARS BEEN LIKE? AND THE TEACHING STAFF?
Informative, though provoking, interesting, engaging, take your pick! There’s a great diversity of topics in the seminars, delivered by experts and industry leaders, all of which are germane to the course content. The lecturers are knowledgeable, approachable and infinitely helpful.. The staff are also really open to ideas. When I proposed my own dissertation topic, I was steered to people in the business school who were keen to be involved.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT STUDYING FOR A MASTERS AT ITS?
I’d encourage anybody thinking of coming here to do just that. As long as you’re prepared to put the work in, the rewards are there for you and it’s a great place to be.
