MA Performance Design

Course Description

The Performance Design MA is informed by current research and innovative practice in performance design, including; immersive and participatory forms of performance, scenography, design-led performance, innovative design both within and beyond theatre buildings and contemporary spectatorship.

The programme combines rigorous academic study with practice-led investigation. You will explore how scenography, how scenographic materials (light, space, objects, costume, sound) can work together to make meaning for an audience and there will be opportunities to use the theatre studio as a laboratory for design experimentation. You will extend your own practice through designing and making performance material within the context of a research-led curriculum. Alongside this you will develop your capacity as a researcher.

Performance Design is taught within the context of an MA portfolio which engages with contemporary performance and arts practices and their role in the wider cultural, social and economic landscape. The Performance Design programme places the practice of performance design in the wider critical context of the creative and cultural industries.
