The MA affords an excellent platform for further work at doctoral level in the rich field of American literature and culture. Focusing both on literary texts and their cultural contexts, a wide variety of modules permits students to study different genres, authors and periods, with experts in the field. Literature is considered alongside other forms of expression, including film. You will also engage with theoretical issues pertinent to the advanced study of the field of American studies.
You will be taught in weekly seminars in small groups. Options are subject to change from year to year; please consult our website for current details.
A 2:1 honours degree in English, American studies, a degree including English or American studies, or in a related subject. Some knowledge of American literature and culture will be an advantage, but is not a requirement. You will be required to submit a piece of your own written work, of about 2,000 words in length, as part of our admissions procedures. Admissions judgements are made on this piece of work, together with references, grade transcripts, predicted or actual degree results, and other appropriate qualifications.
