Course Description

2016 Postgraduate Tizard programmes will close to applicants at 23:59 hrs on Thursday 21 April 2016. Applications received after this time will be held for consideration for 2017 entry. The final tranche of interviews for 2016 will be held during the week of 23 May 2016. Applicants unable to make themselves available this week (in person or via skype or telephone) will be considered for 2017 entry.

This programme is an advanced professional development programme involving some or all of the following: distance learning; study workshops; service placement visits; and a clinical placement (which can be in your home area).

Coursework is taught through a mixture of web-based resources, directed reading, videos, lectures, seminars and practical sessions, supported by a number of workshops, where you work with skilled professionals and have the opportunity to share ideas and experiences with fellow students.

You work in two different placements during the course of the programme: a service placement based at the Tizard Centre and an individual clinical placement based in a community learning disability team or social care service. You complete a dissertation which must be based on empirical research in services.

About the Tizard Centre

The Tizard Centre is part of the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research (SSPSSR) and has excellent links with health and social care organisations, and other relevant establishments.

The Centre is at the forefront of learning and research in autism, intellectual disability and community care, and in 2013 received a Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition of its outstanding work in these areas.

- to find out more about how to effectively support and work with people with learning disabilities

- to help carers, managers and professionals develop the values, knowledge and skills that enable better services

- to aid policymakers, planners, managers and practitioners to organise and provide enhanced services.

The Tizard Centre is recognised as leading the field in deinstitutionalisation and community living, challenging behaviour, quality of staff support, sexuality and autism, and has had a significant impact on national policies in these areas. We are committed to addressing issues arising from social inequality.

Modules

The following modules are indicative of those offered on this programme. This list is based on the current curriculum and may change year to year in response to new curriculum developments and innovation. Most programmes will require you to study a combination of compulsory and optional modules. You may also have the option to take modules from other programmes so that you may customise your programme and explore other subject areas that interest you.

Assessment

Each of the four taught modules is assessed by a one-hour, web-based, multiple-choice exam and an extended essay. In addition, the Research Methods module involves short assignments and a worked problem. Placements are assessed by two 2,000-word service reports and one 4,000-word case report, plus feedback by placement supervisors.

This programme aims to:

- enable psychology/social science graduates to undertake analysis and intervention with individuals and intellectual disability services.

Research areas

Current research areas include: social inequalities and community care; intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Careers

Our postgraduate courses improve employability prospects for both those with established careers and new entrants to the field. Many of our students already work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in professional, management or supporting capacities.

Our programmes support their continuing professional development and enhance their opportunities for career advancement. Other students, who are at the beginning of their careers, move on to a range of professional roles in health and social care including working as psychologists in learning disability or behavioural specialists in community learning disability teams; service management of development roles; clinical psychology training or a PhD.

Career destinations include working as a consultant behaviour analyst, carer co-ordinator, service care manager, special needs teacher, quality officer, ABA tutor and research assistant in various health care organisations such as Dimensions UK Ltd, Care Management Group, Consensus Support Services, Mencap and Ambitious About Autism.

Why did you decide to study at The Tizard Centre?
I was attracted to Tizard’s programme because it included two placements. I thought this practical element would be very useful and it has been.

How did the course go?
Very well. I studied full-time: it was a very intense year. I attended Tizard for four days once a month and really enjoyed the lectures and seminars.

The people who taught us had lots of practical experience so you didn’t feel that you were being taught by people who knew the theory, but not how it worked in practice. We also had people coming in from outside to talk to us, which was very useful. We were a fairly small group of students, but there was a range in terms of age, background, work experience and aspirations. We got on well and would meet in the library to work on group projects.

How did your placements go?
The placements are one of the great things about the Tizard course; they relate directly to the work and you can match theory to reality, which gives you an advantage over people whose courses didn’t offer them.

The first was a service placement. There are often competing demands on care providers, the Care Quality Commission might be asking them to work on one area, their employer another and the people they are supporting have very particular needs which must be met. Care managers have to balance all these things. Our job was to look at a particular service and identify where there were issues that were preventing them from offering the residents the best and most appropriate support. I learnt a lot about facilitating change by looking at all the different issues that impact on the service provided, which has been really useful in my current role.

My second placement was a clinical placement, where I worked within a Clinical Psychology team for six months. I had a caseload and had to write a case study; it was a great way of pulling everything I had learnt together. Sometimes you understand something in theory but then, when you come to do it in practice, you realise that you need more support, so it was very useful from that point of view.

The Graduate School Scholarship Scheme was established in 2009 to celebrate the founding of the University's Graduate School, which is responsible for the strategic development of graduate education and research within the University. The scholarship provides a £1,000 reduction (£500 per annum for part-time students, for 2 years) in tuition fees to University of Kent 2015 graduates who earn a Bachelors degree with honours (or undergraduate Masters degree) and register for a postgraduate degree at Kent by 1 October 2015.Candidates can hold the Graduate School Scholarship in conjunction with other awards except where these awards offer full fees and a Research Council UK equivalent maintenance grant. The Graduate School Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with the University's loyalty discount.

Music Scholarships - 15 Awards

The University of Kent recognises the role that music and culture plays in the development of the individual and the benefits cultural activities bring to the wider University community. It offers Music Performance Scholarships of up to £5,000 each year to talented instrumentalists and singers studying for any degree. The scholarship is intended to encourage excellence and development in music performance, and includes instrumental/vocal tuition with experienced teachers. Around fifteen scholarships are awarded to new applicants each year. In return, recipients are expected to make a major contribution to the musical life of the University. Scholarships will normally be allocated only to those students whose musical interests and talents can be supported within the University community.

Music Scholarships/Awards are intended to recognise and encourage excellence. Entry Requirements

A good honours degree, typically in psychology or other relevant social sciences, or comparable professional qualifications and experience. Analysis and Intervention in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities students also need some practical experience in services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
