Mathematics and its Applications - MSc

Course Description

Studying Mathematics at postgraduate level gives you a chance to begin your own research, develop your own creativity and be part of a long tradition of people investigating analytic, geometric and algebraic ideas.

This programme allows you to further enhance your knowledge, creativity and computational skills in core mathematical subjects and their applications giving you a competitive advantage in a wide range of mathematically based careers. The modules, which are designed and taught by internationally known researchers, are accessible, relevant, interesting and challenging.

About the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS)

The School has a strong reputation for world-class research and a well-established system of support and training, with a high level of contact between staff and research students. Postgraduate students develop analytical, communication and research skills. Developing computational skills and applying them to mathematical problems forms a significant part of the postgraduate training in the School.

The Mathematics Group at Kent ranked highly in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise. With 100% of the Applied Mathematics Group submitted, all research outputs were judged to be of international quality and 12.5% was rated 4*. For the Pure Mathematics Group, a large proportion of the outputs demonstrated international excellence.

The Mathematics Group also has an excellent track record of winning research grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Royal Society, the EU, the London Mathematical Society and the Leverhulme Trust.

National ratings

In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, research by the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science was ranked 25th in the UK for research power and 100% or our research was judged to be of international quality.

An impressive 92% of our research-active staff submitted to the REF and the School’s environment was judged to be conducive to supporting the development of world-leading research.

Course structure

At least one modern application of mathematics is studied in-depth by each student. Mathematical computing and open-ended project work forms an integral part of the learning experience. There are opportunities for outreach and engagement with the public on mathematics.

You take eight modules in total: six from the list below; a short project module and a dissertation module. The modules concentrate on a specific topic from: analysis; applied mathematics; geometry; and algebra.

This list is based on the current curriculum and may change year to year in response to new curriculum developments and innovation. Most programmes will require you to study a combination of compulsory and optional modules. You may also have the option to take modules from other programmes so that you may customise your programme and explore other subject areas that interest you.

Assessment is by closed book examinations, take-home problem assignments and computer lab assignments (depending on the module). The project and dissertation modules are assessed mainly on the reports or work you produce, but also on workshop activities during the teaching term.

A postgraduate degree in Mathematics is a flexible and valuable qualification that gives you a competitive advantage in a wide range of mathematically oriented careers. Our programmes enable you to develop the skills and capabilities that employers are looking for including problem-solving, independent thought, report-writing, project management, leadership skills, teamworking and good communication.

SMSAS Bursaries for Taught Postgraduate Students - 10 Awards

The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science has established a bursary scheme to support taught postgraduate students who wish to study for one of the following courses:Postgraduate Diploma in Actuarial Science
MSc in Applied Actuarial Science
MSc in Finance, Investment and Risk
MSc in Mathematics and its Applications
MSc in StatisticsThe school will award up to 35 bursaries of between £500 and £1500. All applicants who have accepted a place on one of the above courses will automatically be considered for a bursary. There is no need to make a separate application. Overseas/home/EU fee paying students are all eligible.There is no formal closing date but we recommend you apply for your chosen course before the end of July 2011. The selection process continues until all bursaries are awarded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) - 5 Awards

•GTAs are employees as well as students.
•The award-holder will undertake 96 hours of work to support the School's undergraduate teaching in mathematics and statistics.
•In addition to the 96 hours of work, the award-holder will be expected to undertake training for their teaching support role, and to act as an ambassador for the postgraduate programme, for example by attending events to talk to prospective students.
•There are opportunities for outreach and engagement with the public on Mathematics and Statistics.

Value of Scholarship(s)

The award consists of tuition fees paid at the home/EU rate and a salary of £3,387.84 per annum (20


•A First Class Honours degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent.
•Potential to carry out research.
•Potential to support the School's undergraduate teaching.
•Relevant work experience is valuable, but not essential.
•Preference will be given to students interested in proceeding to a research degree at the University of Kent.

Students who are already enrolled in Stage 1 of any of the International Masters programmes in Mathematics and its Applications, Statistics, or Statistics with Finance, and who will be proceeding to Stage 2 as a full-time student in 2014/15, should complete step 2 above only. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed. The interview may be conducted by phone or Skype. Applications close 17 July 2014.

Kent Bursaries - 20+ Awards

Bursaries are £10,000 each for study on a taught Master's degree programme at the University of Kent. It does not need to be repaid. Bursaries can be for full or part-time study (over a maximum of two years);
The bursary will contribute to the cost of tuition fees for the Master’s degree and any associated University charges (ie accommodation fees) with any balance awarded as a maintenance grant;Students must register for a taught Master’s degree programme at Kent (i.e. for an LLM, MA, MSc) in September 2015.Bursaries will be distributed in accordance with the following priorit:-
- students satisfy the eligibility criteria (below);
- student have a First or 2.1 undergraduate degree classification;
- the date that all conditions of the offer are satisfiedIt is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all necessary data has been submitted and conditions of offer are satisfied as soon as possible;The bursary cannot be held in conjunction with other funding except in exceptional circumstances and will not be awarded with any other funding from the University of Kent, for example the Alumni Loyalty Discount or Graduate School Scholarship.The University will aim to make allocations by mid-July 2015. If you qualified for support under the Kent Financial Support Package then it is likely that you may be eligible for the Postgraduate Support Scheme. This criteria will be refined once further information is published by HEFCE:

A first or second class honours degree in a subject with a significant mathematical content (or equivalent). Students not meeting the entry requirement may take the two year full-time International Master’s in Mathematics and its Applications.
