Graphic Design MA

Course Description

Graphic Design is a sophisticated mode of communication in the twenty-first century. Consumers access ideas through the visual language of graphic forms and their experiences are shaped by the relations we, as designers, create between form and image. Graphic Design is made up of many different processes and inhabits a multitude of contexts. In the design of information graphics for different commercial and artistic platforms the world of the graphic designer occupies both physical and digital arenas. Graphic Design contributes to a system building process where the interface between type and meaning is at the forefront of innovative and dynamic communication tools of the future.

Our MA in Graphic Design offers continuing or recent graduates from creative design subjects with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge, creative skills and employment prospects. Our course aims to encourage you to push the boundaries of graphic practice with the development of innovative and imaginative concepts and ideas relevant to the design of graphic products and artefacts. We will introduce you to a variety of platforms and a range of situations and contexts within which graphic design sits, enabling you to experiment, expand, progress and communicate your ideas through different forms and processes. Our practice-led modules facilitate opportunities for you to produce high quality portfolios often underpinned by industry focused trends and competition briefs.

2094.jpg What are your career ambitions and in what way did these influence your decision to come and study at Huddersfield?

I’ve always wanted to illustrate for children’s books and having taken a very long route to get there, the decision to come and study on the Master's gave me the opportunity to try and achieve my ambitions.

Is your course related to your work? If so, how has the course benefitted your work?

Yes, I work part time as a creative artworker, so the course has helped me develop my skills in creative software and build my ability to fulfil briefs to a higher standard.

Tell us about the teaching methods on your course?

I’ve found that the best teaching method on the course has been weekly group seminars. They are similar to in-depth tutorials but all students on the course have input. You get lots of great feedback and generate more ideas together.

What facilities do you use the most on campus and why?

The design studio in the Creative Arts Building is a great space for spreading out and getting lots of work done in a really creative environment. The library is full of some great books and resources too.

Would you recommend your course to someone interested in that subject area or profession and, if so, why?

Definitely – graphic design has been a great experience and I’d highly recommend it to anyone wanting to reach a higher creative level.

How have you managed to balance your work/life/study with your professional commitments?

It’s taken time to comfortably balance work and university as I’ve been doing both part time but I think if the passion is there and you managed your time well, there is plenty of time to still find time for a life too. I don’t want the course to end.
