Fashion Textile Practices MA

Course Description

The MA in Fashion Textile Practices aims to cover a vastly changing environment. As a broad subject area this course allows you to explore a varied range of fashion and textile directions. It offers continuing or recent graduates opportunities to enhance their knowledge, skills, creativity and employment prospects, through imaginative enquiry into different fashion, textile and surface platforms and processes.
Our MA in Fashion Textile Practices aims to combine advanced creative, aesthetic and technical design skills. You will normally have a degree in a related subject (Fashion Design, Textile or Surface Design, Textile Crafts), may be seeking to develop fresh approaches to your subject (creative pattern cutting, design for fashion, interiors or exterior architectural surfaces, future materials, 3D printed textiles or surfaces, advancing your weave, embroidery, knit or print skills, or textile art), or may wish to build your portfolio for fashion, textile or surface roles in industry in the future. A portfolio of work or ideas is required for subject entry.

2093.jpg Your time at the University of Huddersfield – what are your experiences so far?

My time at the university has been a huge learning curve.

I have acquired a substantial amount of creative and technical skills, which I believe will benefit me in the future. Most of all I have learned a great deal about myself; where my strengths and weaknesses are and how to improve where necessary. The MA course has definitely enhanced my confidence in myself and my abilities and my communication skills have developed considerably.

In particular, the course has helped me to engage in professional engagement activities which have been of great benefit to the planning of my Final Major Project.

I have made many international friends, which has made my time here so much more exciting.

Why did you choose the University of Huddersfield?

I chose the University because I had heard a great deal about the fashion course here. When I came here for my interview the staff were very welcoming and the atmosphere on the campus was great. Staff are supportive in helping students gain more professional experience which can be very useful when seeking employment after completion of the course. The University has a wide range of facilities for the students to work with and the fashion resources available are of an excellent standard.

What are your future career aspirations?

I am currently looking for a job in the fashion design industry and wish to use all the skills I have learned during my time at the University of Huddersfield. I want to gain as much experience as I can from the industry so that, in the future, I can start my own label and hopefully become a successful designer.

During your time at the University of Huddersfield, have you won any awards/competitions?

My work was chosen to be showcased at a charity fashion show hosted by the Vice Chancellor for HRH Princess Beatrice. This was the highlight of my Master's. My collection was also chosen for the Graduate Fashion Show. This is the first time an MA collection has taken part in a Graduate Fashion Show. I regard this as a mark of achievement.
