MSc Information Systems Management

Course Description

Information Systems (IS) as a discipline is a combination of IT systems, business analysis, organisational and management theory, psychology and sociology that have found their home in IS. This is largely because these diverse areas are required now in increasingly complex organisational environments.

An organisation's critical work systems are linked to the Information Systems that supports them. In the context of this course we assume the term ‘information system' involves computer technology. However, the course places more emphasis on the human and organisational aspects of IS than on the computer systems that may form part of them.

This course has been developed to deliver the higher level, essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a role managing large-scale information systems. It will encourages you to reflect on the bigger picture of information systems management by taking a wider perspective on the strategic challenges that occur.

The course will enable you to develop the skills and expertise required to become an innovative problem solver who can bridge the gap between those focused on IT and those focused on business.

Rupali Bhujade

609.JPG Rupali Bhujade is currently studying for the MSc in Information Systems Management,
whilst also working full-time at a health care IT company and raising a family.

“Having completed all of my previous university education in India, the prospect
of embarking on a Master’s course in England was quite daunting. I have a family to
support and a career to attend to, so making the right choice in terms of the course
was, of course, very important.

“My husband and I did some research into the best courses for me, and we found
that Huddersfield was not only great in terms of its location, but also the timetable
seemed to be quite flexible, which was perfect when taking into consideration my
work and my toddler!

“Studying for the MSc in Information Systems Management has given me confidence
and strength that I didn’t know I had. Of course, it was a big decision for me,
especially in the current financial climate, to decide to come back to education,
but it has provided me with so many opportunities that I would previously not have
had. I have moved from a job which was unsatisfactory to one where I’m happy
and which is helping me to use the skills I’m learning on the course.

“Overcoming these challenges has helped me a great deal, but the best thing is
knowing that I have helped others to face such difficulties – a friend of mine in a
similar situation to me was unsure about whether to come back to education, but
seeing my success has spurred her on, and she is now studying on the same course!

“I would recommend Huddersfield as an ideal place to study, as it’s such a
supportive and friendly atmosphere, and really inspires you to fulfil your potential.”
