Music (MA by Research)

Course Description

You will join a thriving community of postgraduate musicians receiving regular individual tuition from academic and instrumental staff with national and international reputations.
Our MA by Research programmes offer a unique way to combine the taught content and supervisory support of a traditional Master’s course with the flexiblity and dynamism of a tailor-made research degree.

Some of the areas that you could choose to focus on - or combine - include:
Performance – performance, historical performance, brass band music, contemporary music, improvisation
Musicology – historical musicology, critical musicology, film musicology, music theory and analysis, popular music studies, contemporary musicology and analysis
Composition and Music Technology –composition, live electronics, interactive technologies, improvisation, sound art, installations, popular music composition, sound design, multimedia, music for film.

The MA by Research is unique for its flexibility, including opportunities for all aspects of music making, and is particularly suitable for students with multidisciplinary interests.

You’ll have opportunities to collaborate with other composers, performers and musicologists, work with visiting guest musicians and researchers, and perform in the University’s regular concert series. In addition to the purpose-built facilities in the Creative Arts Building, your base, our well-resourced Music Library is only two-minutes’ walk away, and is particularly notable for its extensive collection of 20th and 21th century scores and recordings, including the resources of the British Music Collection.

Graduates holding an Upper Second Class or First Class Honours Degree from the University of Huddersfield are offered a £500 progression (fee waiver) bursary.
