1698.jpg Joining the MAS program of 2008 at the HCA was an extremely rewarding experience in my student life. That the program could attract a lot of international students created a lively learning atmosphere as well as a great pool of knowledge from different parts of world. The internationality of the program served as a good reference point when perceptions of the U.S. role in each part of the globe were discussed in the lectures. Besides, activities such as the TGIFs, dinner get-togethers at Thanksgiving as well as a one-week trip to Berlin could foster a great bond and a mutual understanding of different cultural values among students in my program. What is more, an American Studies program at a renowned German academic institution like the University of Heidelberg with excellent faculty professors provided me with a lot of essential research skills in and interdisciplinary knowledge of American Studies. The lectures, the discussions, and the colloquia in the program were particularly intriguing and inspiring. Last but not least, the MAS staff was very friendly and supportive. Without their help, my transition to a student life in Heidelberg could not have been so smooth and easy. Overall, for those who would like to obtain a Master in American Studies in Europe, the MAS program at the HCA is the best choice for its prominent faculty and staff, interdisciplinary study program, and international student body.

1699.JPG The HCA was a great opportunity for me to living in Germany. I have lived here for quite a while as an English teacher and when the chance came up that I could get a MA at the HCA I jumped at it. I always thought I wanted to get a MA and American Studies seemed really interesting to me, especially since I had been teaching English as a foreign language, culture and history to Germans for many years. I could only give a layman’s point of view on various topics concerning Americanism and Atlanticism and as a result I felt that I needed more to become a better teacher for my students. At the HCA I learned a lot about the foundations of American though and the scientific approach to history and political science that gave me new insights into my homeland. Additionally, I felt a strongpoint of the HCA is its focus on international and interdisciplinary aspects of American Studies. The American Studies scholarship is profoundly more interesting within these aspects. Learning about American Presidents and combining it with literature, as well as world literature and international views on political science, helps develop a new way of thinking that I found immensely pleasing. I combined Ecocriticism and political science to craft my thesis, which is something I am deeply proud of. Lastly, I would like to say that the HCA has a friendly staff, modern facilities that are second to none, a fantastic backdrop in Heidelberg and a highly professional teaching staff that will give prospective students a chance to deepen their understanding of North America. As a former student I also cherish the time that I had with my fellow classmates, I could not have completed this program without the mutual support that we shared over course of our studies.

1703.jpg The MAS means an opportunity to talk with erudite professors and elite classmates; a dynamic and multicultural learning environment in which you cultivate yourself with global visions; a truly remarkable and exhilarating time that you will treasure as a life experience; and a golden springboard for uplifting your future career. A MAS at Heidelberg University provides all that in spades! (He Zhang, MAS 2011)

1704.jpg I received my Master's degree from the Heidelberg Center for American
Studies in 2011. Starting with my very first inquiries about the program
and continuing throughout my time there, I found the staff at the HCA to be
exceptionally helpful and friendly.

The great strength of the curriculum lies in its multi-disciplinary nature.
Unlike most programs which focus exclusively on literature, the HCA includes
perspectives from the fields of Geography, History, Law, Religious studies,
and Political Science-dimensions which are essential for a thorough
understanding of American culture and its complexities.

Complimenting this multi-faceted course work are the diverse perspectives of
the students themselves, who are drawn from all corners of the globe.
Besides the personal friendships which arose out of the close contact we had
throughout the program (including an exciting week-long trip to Berlin), I
learned first-hand how the United States is viewed through a variety of
national lenses. In my opinion, this cultural interchange is an integral
part of any education which aims to prepare students for the truly global
world we live in today. Connected to this, as well as its importance to the
material itself, they have rightly chosen to conduct the entire program in
English, so that you really feel part of an American Studies community.

Besides the academic conferences hosted by the HCA, weekly colloquiums,
often featuring well-known speakers, provide the chance to come into contact
with some of the most current research going on in many fields relating to
American Studies.

In short, it is hard to imagine a more exhilarating intellectual environment
in which to do a Master's degree-and all this situated in the middle of
scenic Heidelberg!
