Speech and Language Therapy, PGDip

Course Description

The content for this programme, which is offered by the University of Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church University, is applied closely to the practice of speech and language therapy. The programme gives students a detailed understanding of the changes that occur and difficulties that can arise for the individual who seeks the help of a speech and language therapist.

Speech and language therapists work in hospital wards and outpatient departments, mainstream and special schools, day centres and clients' homes, and courtrooms, prisons and young offenders' institutions. Practice placements are organised to give experience of a number of these settings.

The programme aims to develop speech and language therapists who are autonomous, accountable practitioners, competent and confident to contribute their evidence-based profession-specific skills and knowledge in the delivery of health, education and social care for users of speech and language therapy services and their families.

The programme is structured to maximise opportunities for learning how to work in an interprofessional and multi-agency context and within a changing workforce. A wide range of assessments are used including written assessments, presentations and assessment of placement education.

The aims of the programme are:

- To acquire and satisfactorily demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills and competencies to meet the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Proficiency for Speech and Language Therapists, QAA benchmarks statements and to practise autonomously, interprofessionally, safely, competently and within the scope of practice, Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)

- To develop a range of clinical skills and the confidence to employ them in practice contexts appropriately

- To develop and comprehensively demonstrate critical understanding of a range of communication and other disorders relevant to Speech and Language Therapy (SLT), and the holistic and interprofessional management of these.

Students are assessed through case studies, essays, situational analysis, oral presentation, unseen papers, a portfolio and reflection.

Professional recognition

Graduates from this programme are eligible to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and become members of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

“It took me nearly three years to get on a speech and language therapy postgraduate programme. To finally succeed after all my efforts and sacrifices was such a personal accomplishment. Since starting the programme, I have learned so much about myself and challenged many of my attitudes and values – which has been both painful and enlightening. I truly believe the programme is the start of a life-changing experience as it has exposed me to such a variety of inspiring and motivational people.

Initially, I believed my heart was with working with children. However, I met an incredible man and his wife, and hearing about their experiences, particularly their journey with cancer and how it has affected their lives, challenged any preconceptions I had and marked a turning point in my life. It has not only transformed my outlook within the profession but has compelled me to keep an open mind.

Support came from a wonderful group of lecturers as well as my peers, who were from a multitude of backgrounds. This really pushed me to recognise and work on my strengths and weaknesses in order to become the best therapist I could possibly be.

Although this is a work in progress, I am in no doubt that I will continue to improve my skills through the programme’s synthesis of placements (ranging from paediatric to adult learning disability), nurturing learning environments and self-directed study.

An aspect of the programme that I really appreciate is that it embraces your individuality. This is important as, alongside our knowledge and passion, it makes us accountable and autonomous practitioners. As a result, the programme gives you the tools to make the most of your unique and exceptional talents upon entering the speech and language therapy profession.”


Fast Forward Master's Scholarships - 20+ Awards

Our Fast Forward Master's Scholarship will provide £5000 support which can be taken either as a discount from the normal fee or a cash bursary.Up to 80 scholarships will be available across the university.Criteria and who can apply?- Final year University of Greenwich home undergraduates (subject to a simple financial means threshold details below) who are predicted to achieve a First or Upper Second class degree. Offers for the Scholarship scheme will be made conditional upon achievement of that degree outcome.- Available for part time programmes. Part time fees will be split across the first two years of study.- Students will need to have a declared household income of £40,000 or less, and will be asked to demonstrate this by providing certain information as requested by the university.- Students funded by Student Finance England (SFE) will need to ensure that SFE have "consent to share" their household income assessment with the university.- Students who receive funding from Student Finance Services European Team, Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland or the Student Awards Agency for Scotland will be asked to by the University to provide documents from their funding provider to verify their household income.- Fees will be subject to a 5% prompt payment discount if paid in full by the end of September 2016. Other fee waivers (for example the Alumni and First Class Honours waivers) will not be payable in addition to Fast Forward Master's Scholarships.

Before applying for this scheme you must first make an application for an eligible University of Greenwich Master's programme.Applications for Fast Forward Master's Scholarships will be addressed to check whether:- They meet the eligibility tests as summarised above and as set out more fully in the self-check eligibility test (see below)- They are predicted to achieve a First or Upper Second class degree.Those applications which pass this assessment will result in scholarship offers, on a first come/ first serve basis.
