Leadership and Management (Social Work) (PGDip, MSc)

Course Description

This course is subject to validation

Taking a critical view of relevant theory and research, and applying it to social work management your own organisation is at the heart of this innovative course. The programme is designed to deliver part of the higher specialist standards and requirements of the GSCC Post Qualifying Higher Specialist Award in Leadership and Management. To achieve the full award, students will be required to build on this award and complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership and Management in Social Work. The target audience is qualified and registered social work managers (Deputy Team Manager and above).

The main educational aims of the course are to provide you with opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills required of first line managers in the areas of human resource management, reflective supervision, using and developing service standards, managing change and problem solving.

It will help you to make a successful transfer of your skills and knowledge from social work practice to leadership and management, and to understand the similarities and differences between the roles. Encouraging you to put yourself at the boundary between organisational goals and professional practice, the course will help to develop a critical understanding of the political and policy context of providing social care services, along with the implications for leadership and management in social care.

The subject pathway sessions were particularly good as the course leader not only had a many years of experience teaching my subject, but he also ensured we all knew and felt comfortable with all aspects of school life, from parents’ evenings and marking to using outside agencies.”
