Russian for Social Scientists - PGDip


Course Description

This intensive programme in Russian Language for graduates in other subjects who already possess basic proficiency in Russian but require a more extensive grounding in the language specifically for the purpose of conducting social scientific research dealing with Russia and/or the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Why this programme

-Overall the programme is designed to enable students to acquire sufficient linguistic knowledge and translating skills to be able to read and retrieve information from a variety of texts in the original language, including those related to social sciences, and to deepen their existing knowledge of Russian realia.
-It uses online and distance resources as well as classroom teaching and includes a period of study at a language school in Russia.

Programme structure

The Diploma provides a substantial programme in Russian Language for graduates who already possess basic proficiency in Russian but require a more extensive grounding in the language specifically for the purposes of conducting social scientific research dealing with Russia and / or the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States).

This programme provides students with blended (class room and distance) intermediate-level Russian language tuition over 2 semesters of study. Students will also benefit from a dedicated period of study abroad at a partner institution in the Russian Federation or other country where Russian is spoken as part of the Certificate Course in Russian for Social Scientists.

The content of this programme combines three layers – linguistic, cultural and socio-political which gives the student multifaceted language skills and knowledge about the country and the people. These skills are to be developed through a variety of different learning activities and assessment tasks: classroom sessions, elements of distance learning, interactive Moodle exercises and self-study.

Career prospects

Those who have completed the course have gone into teaching, commerce, financial services, translating, postgraduate study and other occupations.

Aga Khan Foundation - International Scholarship Programme - No. of awards TBC

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from select developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies, in order to prepare them for employment, primarily within the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but may consider applications for PhD programmes, in the case of outstanding students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professors and who need a PhD for the fulfilment of their career objectives (academic or research oriented).
Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.To be eligible applicants must
- Be nationals of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. May also be considered those originally from these countries but currently living in France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, who are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education.
- Demonstrate consistently excellent academic records
- Show evidence of genuine financial need
- Have obtained admission to a highly reputable university or programme of study
- Establish relevance of the field of study to AKDN’s focus areas
- Provide thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans, their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment.
- Have some years of work experience in their field of interest.Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis.
The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Funding for PhD programmes is only provided for the first two years of study, after which the students are expected to find alternative sources of assistance. Financial assistance is provided according to the needs of students, but the International Scholarship Programme must be considered a lender of last resort. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.

Application Procedure

Application forms can be obtained as of 1st January from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services/Boards in the applicant’s country of current residence.
The application procedures of AKF's International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained. They should not be sent to Geneva.
Applicants should be prepared to be interviewed by local Scholarship Committees about their financial situation, their academic performance, extra-curricular achievements and career plans. Applications and Interview reports of shortlisted candidates are sent to Geneva for the final selection.
The annual Scholarship Selection Meeting takes place in late June or early July and the Aga Khan Foundation notifies all students of the outcome of their application shortly thereafter.

The College of Social Sciences has introduced scholarships, available to graduates of McGill University who apply to the Masters programme at the University of Glasgow, commencing in September 2016. The scholarships will be awarded as a tuition fee waiver.

- You must secure an offer (conditional or unconditional) of a place for one of the eligible programmes.

The University of Glasgow award a total of 40 postgraduate scholarships worth £5,000. Scholarships are available to students entering any of the University’s colleges and are awarded as a tuition fee discount.

The University of Glasgow offer 52 University Trust International Leadership scholarships to international (non-EU) students starting a postgraduate taught Masters programme in any discipline. 12 awards worth £10,000 and 40 awards worth £5000 will be awarded as a tuition fees discount.
