Clinical Trials & Stratified Medicine - MSc


Course Description

Stratified Medicine holds huge potential in the timely development of new treatments for human disease. It is among the most important concepts to emerge in 21st century clinical science and will be a crucial component of the global drive to increase the efficacy, safety and cost effectiveness of new treatments. This new taught postgraduate Masters programme draws on the current and future needs of the Life Sciences sector, to create a highly skilled workforce. It harnesses Scotland’s strengths in Stratified Medicine, Clinical Trials, Bioinformatics and Pharmacogenomics to provide focused training which integrates basic and clinical sciences, and equips students with grounding in the essential skills required to design, execute and evaluate modern clinical interventions.

Why this programme

-The programme will cover the principles which underpin the emerging science at the interface between genetics and pharmacology and the clinical evaluation of the resultant new medicines, taught by internationally recognised experts.
-The aim of this programme is to train researchers who can break down the barriers that currently prevent discoveries at the bench from being translated into treatments at the bedside.
-University of Glasgow is rated in the top 1% of universities worldwide, and has a global reputation in the field of clinical trials and stratified medicine. You will be taught by a multidisciplinary team of world leading scientists and clinicians within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.
-Students will gain an understanding of statistical methods used to evaluate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of new treatments.
-Students on the programme will undergo theoretical and practical training in state-of-the-art research processes available to researchers in Glasgow, enabling an appreciation of how to apply novel stratified approaches, together with clinical pharmacological, regulatory and ethical principles to the optimisation of future clinical research and therapeutic practice.
-We have excellent opportunities to engage with industrial and clinical scientists, with guest lecturers from the pharmaceutical industry, medical diagnostic laboratories and bioscience business which will help you understand the science, methodology and terminology used by scientists and clinicians from different disciplines. You will learn to communicate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment, critically evaluate a wide range of scientific data and research strategies and learn how to make a significant contribution to research and treatment in the 21st century.
-You will be taught by a multidisciplinary team of world leading scienctists and clinicians within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.
-Students will learn how all of the above techniques are applied by academic and industrial researchers in the development of new medicines.

Career prospects

Graduates of this programme will be competitive applicants for the positions in the commercial life sciences sector, or for PhD study in an academic or combined commercial / academic environment.

Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith Scholarships - 10 Awards

The prestigious Lord Kelvin/Adam Smith PhD Scholarship scheme was established in 2007 to support the development of innovative, boundary-crossing research at the University of Glasgow. The scheme supports new partnerships between members of staff and will offer outstanding research students both from home and abroad the opportunity to undertake doctoral training in the context of cutting edge interdisciplinary research projects. The Kelvin Smith PhD Scholarships are project-based and the projects will be listed from the beginning of December each year.Each scholarship will run for up to 4 years and will provide the successful students with a full fee waiver from the host College and an annual stipend at UK Research Council recommended rates (estimated to be £14, 002 for 2015/16). In addition the project will benefit from an annual consumables budget for research and travel costs of up to £5300.

Aga Khan Foundation - International Scholarship Programme - No. of awards TBC

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from select developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies, in order to prepare them for employment, primarily within the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master's level courses but may consider applications for PhD programmes, in the case of outstanding students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professors and who need a PhD for the fulfilment of their career objectives (academic or research oriented).
Applications for short-term courses are not considered; neither are applications from students who have already started their course of study.To be eligible applicants must
- Be nationals of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. May also be considered those originally from these countries but currently living in France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, who are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education.
- Demonstrate consistently excellent academic records
- Show evidence of genuine financial need
- Have obtained admission to a highly reputable university or programme of study
- Establish relevance of the field of study to AKDN’s focus areas
- Provide thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans, their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment.
- Have some years of work experience in their field of interest.Preference is given to students under 30 years of age.Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis.
The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Funding for PhD programmes is only provided for the first two years of study, after which the students are expected to find alternative sources of assistance. Financial assistance is provided according to the needs of students, but the International Scholarship Programme must be considered a lender of last resort. Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some funding from alternative sources.

Application Procedure

Application forms can be obtained as of 1st January from AKF offices or Aga Khan Education Services/Boards in the applicant’s country of current residence.
The application procedures of AKF's International Scholarship Programme are decentralised. Completed applications should be returned to the agency from which the form was obtained. They should not be sent to Geneva.
Applicants should be prepared to be interviewed by local Scholarship Committees about their financial situation, their academic performance, extra-curricular achievements and career plans. Applications and Interview reports of shortlisted candidates are sent to Geneva for the final selection.
The annual Scholarship Selection Meeting takes place in late June or early July and the Aga Khan Foundation notifies all students of the outcome of their application shortly thereafter.
