MA Counselling Children and Young People is one of the only Masters courses of its kind. It offers a unique blend of knowledge and skills practice, and provides a pathway to many exciting opportunities within the field of therapeutic work with young people.
The MA is a two-year course, made up of one year’s training on the Postgraduate Diploma Counselling Children and Young People plus one year completing the Masters research and dissertation stage. On completion of the USW Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People you may choose to exit the programme with your Diploma, or you can carry on to complete the MA by undertaking a research project and writing it up in the form of a dissertation. If you already have a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People, you can apply to join the Masters research and dissertation stage directly.
The PG Diploma stage covers both the practical and theoretical aspects of counselling children and young people; on the Masters research and dissertation stage you will learn about research methods for studying Counselling Children and Young People and will undertake a research project of your choice.

- Dissertation: Following the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma Counselling Children and Young People, you will have the opportunity to research and write a 20,000 word dissertation on a topic relating to counselling children and young people.
Work Experience and Employment Prospects
This course will enable you to become part of a new generation of professionals working within schools and other formal and informal youth settings.
On completion of the Masters, there may also be opportunities for you to progress into further study via a PhD route on application, both at the University of South Wales and other UK Universities.

Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People as well as post qualifying counselling experience or experience of working with young people. You must also be a registered member of an appropriate professional body, ie, BACP. Two References must be uploaded with your application (One must be from your clinical supervisor)
