MRes Science and Technology Studies


Course Description

The programme will give you a broad-based knowledge of the use of research methods in the social sciences, as well as core research training in social scientific philosophy and methodology within a contemporary sociology context. It will develop your understanding of the origins, history and development of Science and Technology Studies as a discipline and its theoretical underpinnings. It will equip you with the skills to go on to doctoral research or to pursue a career as a professional researcher.

This programme also forms part of the ESRC South West Doctoral Training Centre – a hub of world-class social sciences research(http://www.exeter.ac.uk/doctoralcollege/fundedcentres/swdtc/).

Programme structure

The programme comprises five compulsory research training modules that provide generic and specific research training, one specialist option, and a dissertation module. Modules are

The compulsory modules can include; Dissertation; Research Methods in the Social Sciences; Philosophy of the Social Sciences; Applied Quantitative Data Analysis; Science Technology and Society

Some examples of optional modules are as follows; Cultures of the Life Sciences; Knowledge & History: Theories of Scientific Change and Philosophy of Science
