The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE, December 2008).
Our Department of Government has steadily consolidated a reputation as the best politics department in the UK and in Europe, with an outstanding record of teaching, research and publication. We gained the highest possible rating in all five UK Research Assessment Exercises (RAE) and, in the latest RAE in December 2008, were judged to be the UK’s best politics department. Our teachers and supervisors are specialists in their fields, sharing a cosmopolitan background and outlook while publishing research that is internationally recognised.
How do political studies' approaches differ from historical accounts of political phenomena? How can politics be used to analyse the real world? What is the relationship between ideas and political practices? Our MA Politics allows you to explore these questions and more.
The course is distinctive from our other Masters in that it allows you complete freedom of choice over the modules you take. It gives a background to the study of politics but is not as theory-focused as our other masters. You will be able to develop in subjects that are of interest to you, so it is ideal if you are looking to develop practical (applied) research skills that you can take into a work place (outside of academia).
