We understand that you may not have the time to do a full-time degree, so our CPD pathways allow you to study flexibly, in the way that best suits you. The structure, mode of delivery and level of support allow you to progress towards a qualification at postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma or Masters level.
We offer two musculoskeletal pathways which enable you, as a clinician, to assess and manage patients with a range of musculoskeletal conditions beyond your normal scope of practice. Optional modules allow you to expand your musculoskeletal practice with a focus on imaging, including ultrasonography, or a focus on patient management including injection therapy.
We: -Provide you with a critical understanding of the key concepts underlying advanced musculoskeletal clinical skills beyond your normal professional scope of practice -Provide you with the opportunity to acquire advanced musculoskeletal clinical skills beyond your normal professional scope of practice -Provide you with skills to access and critically appraise research findings to develop your own evidence-based practice -Enhance your understanding of the essential principles of research design and to conduct an extensive piece of independent research including: planning, formulating, designing, choosing research methods, collecting data, analysing, interpreting and writing-up -Ensure you acquire a range of transferable employment-related skills

We have a range of guest specialists who work with us, including Billy Fashanu, consultant physiotherapist; Mark Maybury, extended scope practitioner, physiotherapist and sonographer; Dr S. Perera, Consultant Radiologist, Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust; and various other tutors such as consultant rheumatologists, consultant neurophysiologist and other injecting practitioners.
The School of Health and Human Sciences is located at two sites; in the Kimmy Eldridge building on the Colchester campus and in the Gateway Building on the Southend campus.
As one of our CPD students, you may be taking modules at either campus or online to suit your needs, which means that you can access facilities across both campuses as required.
Postgraduate study is the chance to take your education to the next level. The combination of compulsory and optional modules means our courses help you develop extensive knowledge in your chosen discipline, whilst providing plenty of freedom to pursue your own interests. Our research-led teaching is continually evolving to address the latest challenges and breakthroughs in the field, therefore to ensure your course is as relevant and up-to-date as possible your core module structure may be subject to change.

"Studying to be an occupational therapist was, in some ways, the most difficult but easiest decision I ever made! At 42 years of age with a well paid job and a young children, giving up our family security unnecessarily seemed rather risky. However, I knew something had to change if I was to be passionate about my job. I was employed in customer-focused/business roles and knew that working with people was a motivating factor for me. However, as I climbed into managerial responsibilities, I discovered I was getting further from the actual customer and more dissatisfied with each role I took.
Once my children were in full-time school, so money and time were less scarce, I began to research a career change. I saw a life coach, spoke to friends and family, and conducted extensive research through the internet. I knew I needed to work with people and do something purposeful, that made a difference.
I gradually narrowed my search and came up with occupational therapy - it met all my requirements and then some! I have always been 'a do-er', trying out many different life experiences, and I believe passionately in the sense of purpose and zest for life that occupation can bring. Learning that the central philosophy in occupational therapy mirrored this, and that such a career met all my motivating drivers, was an epiphany!
It is early days on my course at Essex but I'm enjoying every minute of it. I thought it would be tough going into the world of academia and on to an accelerated Masters course but I have not doubted my decision for one second. In fact, as I learn more about the profession, it feels that where I am now is a culmination of everything I've done before and I know I have made the right choice."
ESRC Doctoral Training Centre scholarships
For 2011-12, our ESRC Doctoral Training Centre will offer 16-fully funded ESRC studentships, most worth £18,000 per year, across over 20 doctoral pathways. The University of Essex has become one of only 21 Doctoral Training Centres accredited by the UK Economic and Social Research Council following a highly competitive selection process. Our Doctoral Training Centre will fund 16 doctoral students each year across many different social science disciplines. It also offers excellent training opportunities and a highly stimulating research environment to hundreds of postgraduate students, researchers, professionals, practitioners and users.
