Jewellery (MFA)

Course Description

Programme description

You’ll have the opportunity to create and present a significant body of work and will graduate with the confidence to establish yourself in our field as an independent maker or designer.

This highly practical programme will see you exploring and developing your creativity through a variety of approaches, from the traditional practices of the goldsmiths’ and silversmiths’ trade to the contemporary influences of art, craft, design, technology and science.

You’ll work in a vibrant, well-equipped environment, with individual bench space and access to machine workshops and a drawing studio. You’ll also have access to the full range of facilities across the University and have the opportunity to explore your art in an interdisciplinary environment.

Programme structure

The MFA runs over two academic years and is four semesters long. Opportunity for exchange to South Korea exists in semester 2 of Year 1. The programme culminates in an assessment of the production of a body of practical and written work on an agreed, self-initiated studio project.

Your study will combine practical studio work with theoretical and written studies, including professional practice elements to prepare you for employment in the industry, and a lecture/seminar series that will examine the wider context of your studies.

Career opportunities

Our connections both in the UK and abroad will provide you with valuable networks to help you establish your career.

Graduates typically establish their own studios or find work with jewellery companies/specialist employers, while many others become part of the next generation of leading academics and teachers at international schools.

We offer a programme that focuses on creating industry-ready professionals with students establishing their own studios or finding employment with international universities or well-known companies like the Scottish Goldsmiths Trust, the Scottish Gallery or the Dovecot Studios.

We have an impressive track record in annual competitions like the national Goldsmiths Company New Designers Award for Jewellery (won in 2014 and 2013), Talente, exhibitions in Munich, the postgraduate student categories of the Craftsmanship and Design Awards in London and invited exhibitions such as Silver Schools, 2010 in Legnica, Poland, the Cominelli Foundation 2012 exhibition, Italy and ‘CONNECT’ 2013, SOFA Chicago USA.
