Chikaodili Okoye - MSc Petroleum Economics and Finance - 2012
"I choose to study in the University of Aberdeen for three main reasons; Firstly, the location in terms of being in one of the world’s oil and gas capitals. Secondly, the experience of theoretical learning combined with practical approach to problem solving which for me was important in the pursuit of my chosen career path. Thirdly, I was strongly recommended to study there by a senior colleague during my internship in Schlumberger.
I wanted to be involved in the processes that drive investment decisions in the petroleum industry given the complex nature of oil and gas projects. Hence I keen on a course that would expose me to the energy industry as a whole, followed by petroleum economics, analytical and critical thinking which the MSc programme is largely designed to do.
If you choose to study at Aberdeen stay focused, network with course mates and join a study group and you won’t have to struggle to get all the information you need by yourself, make friends with the library because it affords tremendous resources for research and learning plus it’s a really cool place.
I started my career as a planning Analyst two months after graduation, and it quickly expanded within 6 months to Planning and Economics as my employer identified that I had significant strength in Economic analysis. My functions include conducting economic evaluations on investment for new field developments and workovers drilling, analysing and reporting company’s corporate performance, conducting research and market analysis to aid new business development. To further develop my knowledge and skill set I have done some courses including Economic Valuation of risky oil and gas assets with the Energy Institute.
I must say that the MSc degree has been of immense contribution to the success in my career so far. I have been able to leverage and build on knowledge gained from different modules particularly petroleum economics, accounting, empirical methods (financial modelling) and corporate finance. Without an initial training I was able to work with economic models and run my own evaluations without much help and I am currently developing an economic evaluation model for the company’s subsidiary gas business. My dissertation was also of immense contribution as it exposed me to the dynamics of debt-equity optimisation which has been a major interest area in my organisation".
