Course Description

The Master of Science Degree in Oil & Gas Engineering (formerly Energy Futures (Oil & Gas)) has been designed to provide students with a detailed knowledge of the technology required to ensure energy provision in the oil and gas industry and aims to give both a theoretical and practical grounding equipping them to become future managers of energy projects. Teaching is by specialist staff drawn from Engineering, Geology, Chemistry, and the Energy Industry each of whom are highly regarded in their field of expertise.

The programme is constantly updated to reflect the current and future needs of the energy industry. One of the main features of the MSc Programme is its interdisciplinary nature, being suitable for students with mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical and other suitable engineering backgrounds. In special cases, the Programme is also made available to those with relevant science backgrounds.

Dissertation – This is normally specified in collaboration with industrial partners, supervised either in the School of Engineering or in the companies. Please note that an industry placement is not compulsory and cannot be guaranteed

The principal method of student assessment is through written examinations. Examinations for the first half-session courses are in last two weeks of January and those for the second half-session are in May. Some courses conducted by the Geology Department have the exams during the course of the semester. Candidates are normally expected to pass all examinations and all projects submissions. MSc candidates must submit a dissertation on their project, and may be required to undergo an oral examination.

This Programme is currently offered as a full-time, on-campus, course. The duration of the Programme is 12 months, starting in late September.

The taught part of the Programme consists of two half-sessions: the first running from September to late January, and the second from late January to mid June. The two half-sessions comprise courses that are taught by staff from the School of Engineering, Department Chemistry, and School of Geosciences. In addition, a number of industrially-based external lecturers contribute to the Programme to give examples of how theoretical concepts are currently being applied in industry.

After the second half-session written examinations in May/June, students registered for the MSc degree start an industry or school based project, where this can be arranged, and at the end of this period, an individual project report, in the form of a dissertation, has to be handed in and examined by our External Examiners, who will may also make an oral examination of some students on all aspects of the Programme. The final assessment takes account of performance in all parts of the Programme and examinations.

2135.JPG University of Aberdeen is located in the most prestigious place for Oil & Gas business. The combination between a prestigious academia and industry was the principal reason for choosing the University of Aberdeen as my first choice for my career development.

I had the opportunity to have teachers with over 30 years of experience in the UK North Sea area which helped me to understand the current and future engineering solutions to address the new challenges ahead the Oil and Gas industry worldwide. Furthermore, I made very good friends from Greece, Cyprus and Colombia and we had unforgettable times studying long hours at the library, sharing our limited student budget and having a lot of fun while learning other languages and cultures.
The locals in Aberdeen are very open with the international students and despite the fact that English is not our native language, people made an effort to understand us and tried their best to make us feel like at home.

The MSc Oil & Gas Engineering is very wide and covers the entire value chain from upstream to downstream operations. My programme help me to understand the current and future technologies, safety applications, economic policies, project management and energy implications into the trading markets that are implicit into the Oil and Gas industry. Thanks to the knowledge acquired, I have more effective work teams and I can give a valuable opinion on areas that are outside of my fist degree (Process Engineering).

Thanks to the advices of the career services in Aberdeen University, I got a summer placement job in Wood Group Frontier and after complete my studies they offered me a position as Process Engineer in Aberdeen. I have been travelling, receiving trainings and getting more responsibilities in the company.

2334.jpg The reputable courses offered, which are tailored towards the Energy Industry, and the traditional nature of the University made it ideal for my needs. I was motivated by the strong presence of International students at the Institution, creating a truly international campus. The University’s ongoing success in Research & Development was also a source of attraction for me.

I enjoyed the quality of staff, the serenity of the academic environment and the City of Aberdeen as well as the great opportunity to meet and interact with experienced industry personnel.

My degree in Oil & Gas Engineering gave me a great opportunity in the Energy Industry.

I graduated in 2008 and my first opportunity came when I relocated to the USA where I joined Halliburton Energy Services as a Directional Drilling Field Engineer. I have since moved on and am now presently working for Baker Hughes Inc. in the Gulf of Mexico as a Directional Driller.

I drill extended reach wells, exploratory, developmental, re-entry wells, multi-lateral well pads, horizontal and directional wells. Referencing Well Plans, I ensure set targets are met using mud motors and Rotary Steerable System and the relevant calculations.

I would recommend the University of Aberdeen to others because of the proven track record of achievements as well as the relationship the University has with the Energy Industry thereby preparing students for a fulfilling career upon graduation.
