MSc Microbiology

Course Description

*** Programme Overview ***

This programme is designed to provide advanced training in molecular microbiology, taught by staff who are research experts in this area. Through teaching and active participation in microbiology research during extended projects, you will investigate molecular microbiology, host-pathogen interactions and immune system interactions by pathogens, environmental microbiology, and the core physiology and biochemistry of bacterial and fungal pathogens.

This MSc programme delivers training needed in a wide range of careers, including the ability to work as an individual within a multidisciplinary team and an understanding of the power of different molecular and DNA based technologies to unlock the problems posed by microbial pathogens.

The Microbiology group at the University of Aberdeen is recognised as one of the leading international research teams working on aspects of bacterial and fungal pathogenicity as well as key medically relevant aspects of microbial physiology and growth. There is a large group of academic staff and research staff engaged in molecular genetics, physiology, biotechnology and immunology.
Research projects will take place in their research laboratories at the Institute of Medical Sciences and will involve the analysis of important problems pertaining to the structure and function of bacterial and fungal pathogens and their chemotherapy.

The programme will equip Masters graduates for rapidly expanding employment opportunities in this field, and will enable them to work in the interdisciplinary teams that are the future of scientific research.

*** Who is this course aimed at? ***

Graduates with a background in a biological discipline or in one of the physical sciences wishing to receive advanced training in molecular microbiology will benefit from this course, which delivers training in a research intensive environment within the Institute of medical Sciences.

The taught programme will provide supportive, carefully tailored training that introduces you to the latest molecular microbiology techniques, alongside advanced molecular biology and bioinformatics.

As the programme progresses, students from multiple discipline backgrounds will work together in interdisciplinary teams, increasingly typical of the scientific workplace. As well as generating an enjoyable team atmosphere, this experience thus provides a valuable employability experience.

*** Career Options ***

Many of the graduates from this programme have used their training directly to move into PhD research within the microbiology field. MSc Microbiology training is also highly valued by the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, either because it can be specifically applied in industrial microbiology to develop novel products and processes, or more generally because it represents an excellent grounding in the molecular biosciences. Industry therefore represents a key potential employer for graduates from this MSc programme.
Graduates from this programme can also progress to work in hospital pathology laboratory services within microbiology, in science education and training, in scientific publishing, in the scientific civil service, and in scientific regulatory and advisory government agencies.

Students in this Aberdeen Masters programme will be studying at a research-led university with a highly successful record in systems biology research funding.
