The pharmaceutical industry spends approximately £5 billion per year on Research and Development in the UK alone and the industry is always looking for graduates with the appropriate training and qualifications. In our MSc in Drug Discovery and Development we aim to train students in the major areas of biochemical and molecular pharmacology and therapeutics relevant to the drug discovery and development business. This includes training in molecular pharmacology, drug metabolism and toxicology, therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmcovigilance, regulatory affairs and clinical pharmacology. The programme also provides training in Bio-Business, a programme unique to the University of Aberdeen, which will describe the critical pathways to the commercialisation of scientific ideas and give the student a window into the business of science.
Over the first two terms students cover a wide variety of subjects as well as receiving training in Bio-Business, generic skills, statistics and IT. Individual courses are delivered by a combination of lectures, lab practicals, seminars, presentations and tutorials. These courses are assessed by a mixture of continuous assessment and written degree examinations.
In addition, students undertake a research project over the final 16 weeks of the programme. Projects are chosen from a range of topics and provide training in research methods, academic writing as well as research and analytical skills and data handling. This is assessed by a written thesis, presentation and viva examination.
The School of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Medical Sciences have a tradition of excellence in both teaching and research both of which contribute to the high quality of our Masters programmes.
