MSc Medical Physiology


Course Description

About the programme

This programme develops a critical understanding of the physiology and pharmacology of a wide range of body systems in health and disease
This programme allows students to understand the causes and diagnosis of disease
This programme highlights the importance of nutrition in health and disease
Students on this programme will use and learn a wide range of techniques and instrumentation (from cellular to whole body) to investigate the body
This programme emphasises the normal values of a wide range of tissue variables and how measurement of changes in these are useful in diagnosis
This programme is unique in explaining how medical instruments work and are used to collect and analyse biological signals
This programme enables students to learn the practical and theoretical skills of basic life support and obtain a first aid certificate
The programme is supported by a newly equipped Physiology, Pharmacology, Sports and Bioscience laboratories.
Specialist lecturers from hospitals and other universities are invited to give lectures to enhance the student experience
Transferable and research skills and practical training are an integral part of the MSc and PGD programme.
Much of the taught component is available on UELPlus allowing students to study at their own pace.

Programme structure

One year full time or two years part time for MSc and PG Diploma (PG Diploma only available as an intermediate award).
One year part time for PG Certificate (only available as an intermediate award).
Part-time MSc students study Research skills for Pharmacology & Physiology in semester A and Clinical Instrumentation & Diagnostic Physiology in semester B of the first year. These are followed by Advanced Cellular Pharmacology & Physiology in semester A of year 2 and Health and Disease of Physiological Systems in semester B. The project would be taken in the summer period.
Taught modules are delivered in a semesterised system, with semesters running from September to January and February to June. The research projects will run through the summer period

UEL Postgraduate Scholarship - 20+ Awards

The UEL Postgraduate Scholarship is a 50% fee waiver on tuition fees. Scholarship is awarded based on an application process, open to applicants who meet the criteria below:Students will only be able to apply for an award if they meet all of the following criteria:
• Have applied for a postgraduate taught masters at UEL starting in September 2016
• Studying full-time or part-time
• Fee assessed as a Home/EU student
• Studying on campus at UELExcludes those studying
• With a collaborative partner
• Via online or distance learning
• A PGCE course
• Professional Diploma in Architecture Part 2 or March Architecture

Eligibility

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must have applied for a postgraduate taught course, starting in September 2016, and be studying at one of our campuses.

Part-time fee waiver - 20+ Awards

Students will only be able to apply for an award if they meet all of the following criteria:
• Have applied for a postgraduate taught masters at UEL that starts in September 2016
• Be a part-time postgraduate student (in attendance) studying at least 50% of a full time course
• Be fee assessed as a Home/EU student
• Be classified as ‘home’ for tuition fee purposes and meet standard residency requirements
• Be studying on campus at UELExcludes those studying:
• With a collaborative partner
• Via online or distance learning
• A PGCE course
• Professional Diploma in Architecture Part 2 or March Architecture
• Integrated Masters, Professional Doctorates, MPhil, PhD In addition, MA Social Work students are also not eligible to apply if they are in receipt of government funding.

Eligibility

You must be on a low income (up to £18,200 or £26,000 with a partner) and receiving one of four qualifying benefits. These are: Job Seekers’ Allowance (income based), Income Support, Housing Benefit and New Deal Allowance.

Alumni Scholarship - 20+ Awards

You should previously have been awarded an undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree, professional doctorate or a postgraduate research degree from UEL or one of its predecessor institutions, such as the Polytechnic of East London.
You cannot apply for the alumni discount if your course involves distance learning or if you are studying towards a master’s and diploma in Architecture (RIBA Part 2), a PGCE, a post-compulsory education and training (PCET) course or any short course or courses worth less than 120 credits.

15 per cent discount on tuitions fees

Eligibility

If you’re a member of UEL’s Alumni Association, you are automatically eligible for 15 per cent off your postgraduate fees*. The offer applies to all UEL alumni, however long ago they graduated.

Application Procedure

Please include on your application form that you previously studied at UEL, and include your old student ID number. The 15 per cent discount will be deducted from your tuition fees after any other scholarships, and before any early payment discount is applied. It can also be used alongside other scholarships and funding.

An international scholarship at UEL covers part of the cost of course fees. Scholarships are highly sought after and the process of applying for scholarships is often competitive and carries deadline dates. Entry Requirements

For entry to this programme, students are required to have a minimum of a second class undergraduate honours degree from a UK university in a relevant subject area e.g. Physiology, Pharmacology, Sports Science, Applied Biology, Toxicology or an equivalent qualification and/or experience. All students admitted to the University are required to have GCSE at grade C in maths and English (or equivalent). International students whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 wit a minimum of 6.0 in all sectors.
